Gerrard with all due respect would not even be good enough to lace the boots of John Charles, who is still regarded as one of the greatest ever players for Juventus, matter of fact, The respect Charles earned from Juventus fans was shown when, on the occasion of the club's centenary in 1997 they voted him to be the best-ever foreign player to play for their team. who the hell are you!...............
...Wasn't he only at Swansea for two seasons? And played for Cardiff? According to wiki he was 14-16 when he was a Swansea youth player...
With all due respect I've made my point! If you respect Gerrard, get him fit, or give him a coaching roll at your club, he's been a good servant and club man, but his lack of quality is starting to show! You boys were talking of a top 6 finish pre season, how does that work?..............
Arsenal were in a worse place last season... and we're a point off Spurs Gerrard's legs have gone... too many injuries that he's played through over the years. And I'd love to hear more about how this Charles fella lit up Swansea FC when he was probably busy cleaning boots!
Stop clutching at straws, he was a contracted Swansea player, when the mighty Leeds came knocking! Mind it's not on Winki, but he was playing for our reserves, and couldn't get into our first team, says something about our setup back then, though we were awash with talent then, but Leeds scouts spotted him, and found a flaw in his contract, which got him an immediate move to the Leeds starting VI..............
But he never actually played for you Whereas Gerrard has scored in every cup final available to a European player! Keep your straws! Also... why were Leeds only playing with 6 players?
I agree here... He needs to go out now whilst he still has his dignity. He needs to be remember for the player he was not the dithering tool hes turning into.
He started his career with Swansea, was a swansea born lad, and is in the Football League 100 Legends, he is also in the Football Hall of Fame! Is Gerrard in there Red? Not knocking Gerrard, but lets remember him when he was great................
Haven't checked or looked at such 'awards'. I see what you're doing, no doubt he's a Leeds and Juve legend... but not a Swansea one! Could have been, but wasn't.
Know your clutching at straws, what bit about him playing for Swansea don't you understand? He was a Swansea youth product, Charles joined the boys section of the local team Swansea Town, who later became Swansea City, he became famous when he joined Leeds, though his greatest achievements were at Juventus!...............
Ok you seem to be struggling with John Charles so let's move on to Ivor Allchurch, who was a much better player that Gerrard! Sir Matt Busby â "Ivor never needed a number on his back for identification. His polish, his class could not be missed. He vies with the greatest of all time, yet he has a modesty that becomes him" Sir Bobby Charlton: "He was a great player, with footballing presence and charisma" Bobby Moore:"One of the best inside-forwards I have ever played against" He made his international debut against England in 1951 and played his final game for his country against Chile in 1966. In all, Allchurch scored 23 goals for Wales (a record until 1986) in 68 appearances (also a record until 1986). He was also a member of the Welsh squad that played in the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. He went on to make 445 appearances and score 164 goals for Swansea. In 1966, he was awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to football...............
Yes, he achieved nothing for Swansea. I said (originally) that you'd never seen a player as good as Gerrard PLAY for Swansea. Charles played his best football elsewhere. Your logic is flawed, I understand fully what you're trying to put across
Gerrard has an MBE... And has 150 goals from 590 games, as a centre mid Want a quote from a United legend? '"He has become the most influential player in England, bar none' - Ferguson, 2003.
You're right I am certainly struggling to see the relevance of Charles or Allchurch to a discussion about Gerrard. However, if you want to make historical comparisons then I'd put Billy Liddell up against those 2 any day.
Well when he does retire I'm sure he'll enjoy spending his time comparing medal collections with Big Al that won't take long will it Well Mr Shearer here's my European, UEFA, FA Cup and League Cup winners medals... Well Mr Gerrard here's a couple of nice ones I won with Kenny So Mr Shearer what did you win once you went Toonwards... Er...well Mr Gerrard I did win this one for completing the Gateshead Fun Run Cue much laughter from Mr Gerrard
Cliff Jones, Trevor Ford, Giorgio Chinaglia, John Toshack, Alan Curtis, Robbie James and the great Ivor Allchurch. All of them are in the same class. Of course, in this age of celebrity I suppose none of them would be allowed on the same pitch as the living God Steven Gerrard.
Ian Rush was my favourite player growing up but surely you can see that Rush had it easier than Allchurch in terms of the team mates around him. Except for Wales of course, Allchurch played in an era of very good Welsh players.
And Mark Hughes,Neville Southall,Pat Van den Hauwe,Kevin Radcliffe weren't 'very good' Welsh players?
Trever Ford barely played for Swansea - his first club. He left. Alan Curtis' goal tally seems very very average. Chinaglia is a Lazio legend. He played a handful of games for Swansea at the start of his career. His best times were when he left. Not even going to look at the others, because this is a trend. Gerrard played his best football for one club, that is the point; I don't care about players who had to leave Swansea to fulfil their ambitions - that means you never saw them at their best!
