Kane might be young but he seems to have the knack of scoring goals. As for Townsend, he is not awful. I wouldn't see him as a starter but definitely the type of player who can change a game if required.

I wouldn't want Townsend here as he strikes me as a very selfish player, always attempting for glory when better options are available. I feel at the moment that we have a team here that is more than happy to set each other up. I think townsend would upset that balance.

I think Townsend has definitely got the talent and is definitely a confidence player; we could give him that here. However we already have a much better left-footed player cutting in from the right so unless he wants to benchwarm yet again, I don't think this is realistic.

Getting the balance right between setting up others and having a go yourself is one of the key aspects of coaching. I've seen a few players arriving at Saints who have developed into good 'providers' - Mane, Puncheon and Rickie to name but three. Tadic on the other hand has had to be coached to take a shot now and again! I think Townsend is a good intelligent player who would be receptive to coaching.

I think we should do all we can to hold on to Jay but if he is determnied to go this sounds like a good deal. Two English players with bags of potential at this level. Kane is particularly exciting. Not sure the acquisitions would leave any room for Ings though which would be a shame.

You cant keep those little birds off the social media can you. Its just tweet tweet tweet with them.

I can't understand why JRod would a. think he couldn't get in the team b. Share those thoughts too publicly or c. Decide it would be that much easier to get in the Spurs team. (Actually I can understand c) I know I'm a deluded optimist but I see a player determined to get fit and playing in a succesful team.

And on the rumours, why Premiership players? They are always too expensive and too highly paid. We haven't bought one for a long time (I really can't remember the last one, help me here) and I'm excluding the loanees like Jack and Ryan. Look at the value Ronald gets from abroad. I believe we are going to buy from abroad and continue to develop our own English players.

I agree with what has already been said, if we can sign Toby and Bertrand and cross our fingers for Pelle and Tadic staying fit then i think the squad as it is with the likes of ward prowse and jrod coming back is capable of doing something special this season. I'm optimistic for a top 6 finish and dreaming of a top 4 finish.

I just thought of a possibility maybe the reason we are looking at Spurs players is because we might be interested in a part exchange. Jrod obviously wants to go and soon he will be able walk as his contract runs out soon which means no compensation.

Spurs have maybe offer a player and money as a part exchange for January? So they don't have to wait until later to sign him.

Seems a good deal to get free player than let Jrods contract run out.

...edit... Ignore me too lazy to read the previous page!...

I would suggest that we do need to strengthen in certain areas as the squad is thin (thinner still with Mane and Mayuka off to the African Cup of Nations). Tadic, Forster and Pele remain pretty irreplaceable and that is a worry.

I'd be very comfortable with Redmond. He'd provide an excellent option of the bench and could develop into an excellent player. Failing that, unless a young player of the same standard became available, I'd probably look to someone like Donovan on loan during the MLS break. Experience and available at the time of year we are likely to be shortest.

If JRod does leave then we will also need a striker. I'd again consider a loan in this area as better players will likely be available in the summer (where I can see us going for Guidetti and one other to compliment what we have). Maybe a Jermain Defoe, Borini or, dare I say it, Rickie Lambert (if Origi does go to Liverpool in January) loan would be a good short term move.

Bertrand and Toby would be brilliant and I'd probably leave sub keeper until the summer, but put a immediate release clause in andy loan move away for Boruc.

We dont lack quality but do lack depth and it's something I expect us to go out and address.

    2 words........Black Box.

If Townsend and Kane are targets, then we must trust they will fit.

I can almost guarantee Jermain Defoe and Rickie aren't figuring anywhere in the workings of the black box!

Well, obviously can't guarantee - but would suspect some sort of malfunctioning if they were!

We all agree that we are a back up striker short.

Would you prefer to spend over the odds on a striker in January or get a proven, premiership short term loan in as an extra short term option befrore focusing our efforts on a more cost effective, long term target over the summer?

The summer is a great time to be clear in your targets and go hard, negotiating good deals - we've shown that we are not bad at all at that! January is generally more a time for papering over slight cracks and providing the squad with the depth it will surely need going forward.

If the right permanent signing is available at the right price though, great.

I get what you are saying and wouldn't mind at all if we got a couple of high quality loans in. I do wonder where this "January premium" comes from though. It's bandied around quite a bit but is there any substance to it? After all, unless the same player were to be sold in both windows, you'd have a hard job proving it actually exists.

The immediate example that springs to mind that I think cause this perception is the whole Carroll and Torres affair from a few years back. Carroll was massively over-priced. Torres was in hindsight and probably in actuality as well.

But comparatively in the same window Suarez was obtained at a bargain price. Without a detailed check of other January transfers that would be where I think the perception of a "premium" comes from

Looking in more detail (difficult because a lot of undisclosed fees):

    2014:
    Good value: Matic, Puncheon, Cabaye

    Arguable "premium" : Mata, Mitroglou

    2013:

Good value: Coutinho, Holtby, Remy, Demba Ba, Debuchy, Sturridge

    "Premium": Samba, Graham, Monreal (debatable)

    2012:

Good Value: Alex, Papiss Cisse, Gary Cahill, Gibson,

    "Premium": Djbrill Cisse

    2011:

    Good Value: Suarez, Demba Ba,

"Premium": Carroll, Torres, Jean Makoun, Darren Bent (although he kept them up)

Debatable: David Luiz, Sessegnon, Edin Dzeko

Seems like the perception comes from that 2011 window when several clubs spent large fees on strikers.
Since then it has been debatable. Looks like it has been rather mixed since then (like most transfers)
