On the Daily Echo, it said Koeman wanted a striker and said that Elia fitted the bill, even though he's a winger, but if we play 3-5-2 he could play up top with Pelle.

 

Not sure we really need another signing in January anyway. We've got cover for all positions now, but although so many people have said the same thing, a backup goalkeeper wouldn't go amiss.

I would say that whether or not we need another January signing hinges on what the ultimate goal is for this season.

If it's a top five finish and an FA Cup run, for example, then I would suggest that we've been seeing too much of the kids and, in particular, Mayuka in recent weeks for us to ultimately achieve that aim without bolstering the squad in January first (if we've needed to turn to them once already this season, there's no reason why we might find ourselves needing to turn to them again - unless we make further signings).

 

Pretty much this for me. With the current squad + Elia (not forgetting that Mane and Yoshida are off for a month(?) or so on internationals) then I think we will do well to finish top 6, and would rely heavily on a lack of injuries/suspensions and not go too far in the FA cup. To make a proper go of top 6 and FA cup I would ideally like to see a few more bodies in in Jan.

The powers that be have to weigh up the cost of buying players now against what they feel we can achieve. Personally I think that anything ahead of last seasons 8th placed finish will be deemed a great success (which should be achievable with the current squad + Elia) so we won't see much more in the way of Jan signings due to their inflated cost, and I'm not sure what the loan rules are seeing as we now have 3 players on loan.

 

The board need to continue to show ambition in order to keep hold of our top players otherwise they will be off as quickly as our previous Judas crew

Welcome to football. Even if we won the league this year it would be hard to keep hold of any of our players in the summer if a top club came bidding for them. All we can do is try and entice a player to stay (very unlikely), failing that get the best price and re invest in the team and hope that selling a player for £30m means we sign 2/3 players who overall make the team better, in the hope that one day we reach a level where the players don't want to jump ship at the first opportunity of one of the traditional big clubs coming after them.
