    Was it not more a case of British overlords not wanting (albeit hugely misguidedly) to encourage Irish indolence by offering relief? The British Government's attitude at the time, even to its own people, was very much "laissez-faire", ie. let people sort out their own problems.

    No. It was an outright murder campaign. There was more food exported out of Ireland than was needed to feed the people at the time. What does how Britain treated their people at the time have to do with it? If those people are happy with how they were treated then that is their lookout <ok>

    That's more neglect than murder though isn't it? It would only be murder if the British deliberately introduced the disease.

    It matters because people are making out that Ireland was targetted. But the truth is that when famines have happened on British soil, they have been similarly ignored.
