Carrick plays a similar role to Arteta for us, wouldn't call him a playmaker. Where's the English equivalent of Mata, Cazorla, Silva? (None of which are even first choice for their country..)

In my opinion, England would die for a midfielder like Arteta. He is really underrated and would walk into the England side in my opinion. He is composed, clever and retains possession really well. He can also play the creative role if need be. But this tells you about the quality of midfielders Spain has, Arteta wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting into the Spanish national side.

I watched the England match last night and almost burst into tears it was so awful. I think it goes to show how much of a pickle England find themselves in when a few first choice players are injured. With no Carrick, the midfield barely has a comfortable defensive-minded player; with Welbeck injured, Milner is a poor left wing replacement; when Rooney and Sturridge are out there's nary an attacker worth his salt who can come in (not that Lambert isn't good, but he's not who I think of as being an international class striker England can rely upon for years to come).

Also, Mother Mary and Joseph - will either Gerrard or Lampard retire from international duty so any England manager doesn't feel the need to pick the both of them (which has rarely ever worked)?

It's pure greed and selfishness on their part. How many times will they fail playing together yet they refuse to hang up their boots. If they really cared about the National team, they would retire and let someone else come in. I totally agree, the level of football on show was so poor, i nearly fell asleep a number of times.

They need to bite the bullet and start all over again. We are so far behind in terms of technical skill that we're starting to look like dynosaurs. We have so much money generated from the Premiership, that they could massively invest in the grass roots and solve our problems in the future. Dyke said we can win the World Cup in 2022? Which players is he referring to that'll do that? Unless he's thinking of importing a bunch of German and Spanish players.....

I like Wellback alot though. For me he has TOP class potential. Cant see him staying at United if he does'nt get more games.

Carrick is probably mis-used and underrated by England to.

To be fair to England they were without three of their most talented forwards (Rooney,Sturridge and Welbeck), and for a country that currently produces as little talent as England does, that was a huge blow for them.

Rooney is the only one of true quality, the other two are good solid Prem players.

I rate Sturridge, I think he has the talent to become a top player Also, Welbeck does do the business for England and is far better than Milner who gives nothing going forward.

Gibbs called into the England squad after Cole pulled out with an injury. A much deserved call up for Gibbs who has been brilliant of late. Clearly going to be second choice to Baines, but still good news for him.

Glad England have made it to the world cup finals, surely we can't be as bad as we have been in the last two?

Looking at that, it's good that Ramsey and Rosicky only have to play one game, and read somewhere that Ozil and Mert will only also play one game in this two week international break. The likes of Flamini and Arteta get two weeks off, while Gibbs is not going to get any game time ahead of Cole and Baines. Also, Wilshere will also play one game.

The big worry is the French trio of Sagna,Giroud and Koscielny. They have two massive games, and they are all starters for the French.
