Needing a big win, playing at home, against a team long since eliminated from advancement, the general consensus is that Canada needs to defend deep and hope to hit them on the break.

And we've scored! We've scored a goal! It was scruffy, and was blatantly offside, but this one was off the striker's foot, rather than his backside!

Just need Mexico to get a couple, and for Canada to score three more improbably lucky goals, and we'll win the opportunity to get utterly embarrassed in the Hex!

...and a remarkable miss, spooning over from point blank, prevents a second.

And shortly thereafter, another remarkable miss. Cyle Larin, you make Jozy Altidore look like Sergio Aguero.

C'mon, Mexico. Score some goals and you might get to face Canada in the next round. If that isn't incentive, nothing is.

And now El Salvador down to ten men...easily the best I've ever seen Canada play, which isn't necessarily the highest bar to clear, but still. Playing in a hugely important match and not turning into a puddle of mush is an achievement.

...and El Salvador scores after some horrific defending, and that is that. A thoroughly creditable performance though, and I'm sorry that all of you will wake up to a wall of posts about the Canadian men's team, which is the only thing marginally worse than waking up to discover that someone has urinated on your throw rug.

Canadians are a generous and compassionate people, and rarely is that more evident than when the national team plays.

Haha. The first 20 minutes or so we were! We then seemed to score with every counter attack. Great performance. I'd like to see them take on our first team.

It used to give our players a chance for a rest, but not anymore :)

At least it will give Koeman a chance for a first holiday.<laugh>

But l will be so bored... those withdrawal systems will start again, the sleepless nights and for what?! To watch Southgate manage a team of overpaid uninterested individuals - the last time l saw Southgate have anything to do with England was a certain penalty miss at Wembley in 1996...

Ahhh; feel better for that rant...

Well Southgate did coach the 21s to the Toulon Tournament this summer. so hopefully its not all doom and gloom. Seems like he's playing it safe with his first squad.

An important couple of games for Wales - away to Austria Thursday evening then home to Georgia on Sunday. Sadly without Ramsey but hopefully the confidence and joy from the European Championships haven't disappeared quite yet...
