Callum Elder One of the three left-backs to have missed the Millwall draw is deadline day signing Callum Elder, who is yet to make an appearance since joining from Leicester City. Elder has been recovering from an ankle injury and is hopeful of putting himself in contention for game time at the end of the international break. Stephen Kingsley Having recently struggled with illness that saw him miss the Carabao Cup defeat away at Preston, Scottish left-back Stephen Kingsley also missed the trip to Millwall after sustaining a hamstring injury in training. It's a recurring problem hampering a number of McCann's players at the moment and it is unknown how serious Kingsley's injury is. Brandon Fleming Just as teenager Brandon Fleming had broken into the starting 11 ahead of Kingsley, the left-back's run of minutes was cut short after coming off in the first half at Preston with an illness. McCann didn't state how serious it was, but also didn't show any concerns of long-term worries and therefore could be in contention for the visit of Wigan. Dan Batty Midfielder Dan Batty captained the team for the first time during the penalty shootout defeat to Preston, but his memorable evening was cut short after sustaining an ankle injury in the second half. Initial fears of potential ligament damage have since been eased and the 21-year-old is hopeful of being back for the trip to Luton Town in just over a fortnight. Matthew Pennington Matthew Pennington got his first Championship start for the Tigers during their draw at Millwall. His debut was cut short after a calf injury forced him off inside the opening 20 minutes. McCann was unaware after the game of how serious any of the injuries sustained against the Lions are, but injuries, especially to his defenders are continuing to be a concern. Reece Burke After an off the ball foul from Murray Wallace, Reece Burke sustained a hamstring injury in the second half against Millwall. Burke has formed a solid partnership with Jordy de Wijs at the back and McCann will be hopeful that Burke's hamstring injury is not a serious one. Jon Toral Spanish midfielder Jon Toral's second Championship appearance of the campaign ended almost as soon as it started, lasting just three minutes at The Den. Toral also suffered from the hamstring curse currently going around City's squad at the moment.
It doesn’t take much for what appears to be a well balanced squad to look threadbare again, particularly in defence.
Is anyone on here knowledgeable enough to say whether having a run of the same kind of injury in a squad (hamstring) is bad luck/ coincidence or a problem with training routines?
Was only asking because of warnings I've had in the past on exercise, that overdoing one set of muscles without paying attention to the oppositional (?) ones can cause problems down the line. But then, surely the trainers and physios looking after the squad know more than the guys down the gym - don't they?
I'm far from an expert on the matter, but I'm pretty sure no one could say for sure what the cause is. It absolutely could be a coincidence. Of course there are things you can do which will increase or decrease risk of injuries, but you can't control it entirely. Personally I suspect that as professionals with all the top expertise available to them, City will be about as well prepared as you can be to avoid injuries. That said, being a championship club who regularly plays two games a week absolutely does risk the chance of injuries to players, no matter how much it might annoy some people who think that because players lead privileged lives they shouldn't be subject to human limitations.
Elder played in a behind closed doors game on Friday and should be available for the squad to face Wigan, Pennington should also be available, Fleming, Kingsley, Toral and Burke are still doubts, but could be available.
Updated... Stephen Kingsley - Available for Luton Dan Batty - Available for Luton Reece Burke - Available for Luton Angus MacDonald - Only just allowed back in training. Jon Toral - Hamstring, return date unknown. Someone's injured, but McCann won't say who, wants to keep Luton guessing.
McCann not saying who it is, likely to be a key player I suspect, Bowen or Turbo I wonder, let's hope not?
