Indeed sadly it is. Really there is a lack of standards when it comes to behaviour. Even in schools kids know that teachers really can't do anything to stop them misbehaving. Its strange really, it shows a certain amount of intelligence on the kids part knowing roughly what the laws are and what they can get away with, yet they are idiots and do stupid things, albeit without punishment. I guess its not too dissimilar for footballers
Sorry I didn't realise the world revolved around Britain and follows British rules. If it was considered racist in Spain (which it isn't) then they wouldn't do it, simple as that. They probably disagree with many of our idioms in the same way. That's how the world works. Stop judging other cultures by your own culture's standards.
This thread was not to be about Suarez specifically. I'm sorry I should not of mentioned him in the origional thread and judging by your name you are clearly a fan. Indeed we can't judge other cultures by our own but I'm sure all that was been implied is that when in a country you must respect their cultures.
I wasn't replying to you mate, just the guy I quoted. My name was made when he first moved to the club last January (when these boards first started.) So it was before all of this racism stuff, and I didn't feel like suddenly changing it. I agree that we should follow the customs of a certain country when we are in that country, but in the same way we shouldn't just expect other cultures to adopt our customs because we think they're better. There are far 'worse' countries in the world than Spain and those in South America if we want to play that game. For the record, I see that most of you guys in here are trying to diffuse the pointless arguing that seems to be going on in most threads. It seems we have a couple of posters on each side who are just intent to cause trouble, even if it means being entirely misguided in their opinions.
Sorry it really wasn't a dig at your username its understandable you want to support him he plays for your club. Indeed some of the comments have got out of hand on threads. Anyway all the best for the rest of the season
when did any footballer sign up to being a role model? when was that ever mentioned as being part of the deal? they signed up to play football - not to morally shepherd every teenage boy with a lacking home life...
I can't agree with the argument, when you cross a border you find different cultures and laws, you may not understand or agree with them, but as you ply your trade, earn your living and live in this new strange enviroment, their laws apply to you, and it matters not one iota what your particular stance is. We have a very large immigrant population close to where I live, (their skin colour is irrelevant), every week in the local papers these people appear in court for driving without insurance/tax/mot/licence, drink driving and speeding. Wether it's their ignorance of the law or contempt for it, it's wrong, and they do NOT get away with it if caught. There are no exceptions nor should there be. ILD OTBC
I wasn't aware that this site was for socio-political commentary on the complex interplay between culture and law.
This 'role model' debate crops up all the time, IMO anyone in public life is always held up as a 'role model' whether they like it or not it's a fact. Unfortunately, due to the pathetic PC laws, human rights act and compensation culture that we live in we have a large section of the population that has no respect for others and indeed no self respect. I also feel strongly that many of the problems in today's society are down to the break-up of the traditional family unit where many teenage boys have no 'role model' father to guide them in life to teach them right from wrong. Another thing, there's no denying that there are many unemployed people desperately trying to find work, but there's also a hell of a lot of people who are happy to sit on their backsides, claim benefits and do absolutely **** all. Bloody hell, I sound like a tory MP ! Anyway, to get back to the op's post, there are many 'arsehole' footballers in today's game. Talented or not, here's my top ten in no particular order other than John (spit) Terry: 1. John Terry 2. Luis Suarez 3. Wayne Rooney 4. Joey Barton 5. Mario Balletelli 6. Ashley Cole 7. Carlos Tevez 8. El Haj Dioff (spelling!) 9. Didier Drogba 10. Ched Evans
