Ooh careful now! She's as much in charge there as she is here

If you care to study Australian history closely, I think you'll find that the 'undesirables' weren't those that were shipped, they were the voluntary immigrants - the government employees who made life intolerable for everyone else. Thankfully, those shackles disappeared a hundred years or so ago and we became the great nation that we are today :)

I did read that your game Millens was called off because your little battles with Swindon require quite a lot of policing, whereas ours requires virtually none, so at present the law is quite happy to let it go ahead.

Back in the early 80's I was stationed near Swindon and went to a few of those local derbies, certainly no love lost there<yikes> It still goes on today even on the local radio JackFM Bristol, taking the mickey out of people from Swindon. Mind you there are some very funny comments, one of the best was ' they were going to back a version of CSI in Swindon' but it was stopped when they realised they all had the same DNA<laugh>

I have a friend who lived in Watford, then moved to Swindon, then moved to Watford and finally moved to Swindon.

Needless to say he knows nothing about football. ;)

No outrageous rumours, nothing from the club and nothing worth reading in WOb's WFC pages. What's the world coming to?

Thought you might like this article Brag.

They might be lampooned as a bunch of truncheon-happy meatheads by leftwing street demonstrators, but that doesn't mean French riot police don't appreciate a nice glass of Burgundy with their lunch.

The notorious Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité, or CRS, are outraged at an official decree stating they can no longer drink wine or beer with their meals.

Until now, a civilised tipple was part of the daily lunch menu of the controversial force, lauded by Nicolas Sarkozy, whose trademark black body armour and riot shields are a regular feature on French streets.

A glass of wine, beer or cider – but not spirits – was always permitted with lunch, including while on duty. Even packed lunches provided out of riot vans while they were patrolling demonstrations came with a can of beer or glass of wine.

But in October last year, authorities were annoyed when pictures published on the website Bakchich showed uniformed riot police swigging beer from cans on the sidelines of a sixth-formers' street-protest against pension reforms in Perreux-sur-Marne, north of Paris. The website reported that having told locals it was too dangerous to go outside during the high-school demo, uniformed officers stopped for a beer on a street corner in full view of the public.

Police unions expressed their fury at the new decree. Paul Le Guennec, of the biggest riot police union, Unité Police SGP-FO, said the French public had not seemed shocked at the notion of a CRS officer drinking at lunch.

"Does the fact that having a glass of wine while eating prevent any kind of worker from carrying out their job? I don't think the chief of police drinks water when he's having a meal," Le Guennec told the paper Le JDD.

The union argued that the CRS did not have a higher incidence of alcohol problems than the rest of society, saying a small drink with lunch was in line with French labour law.

    Thanks Ak.

I saw an article like that in Sra Braga's magazine. I encountered the CRS in Paris a couple of years ago, nice chaps but I can imagine if you get on the wrong side of them they aren't too friendly.

Frenchie one at a time, we are civil here. If you take many you could spill the wine.

You should mingle with the Foreign Legion if you wish to meet a bunch of thugs.

Smiling is removed at the same time their heads are shaved. <yikes>

I have to agree there, when I worked in Annecy I was walking around in Grand Epagny one evening and some Légion étrangère driving about in a few tanks, probably off to the supermarché or plumb shop. Scary bunch.

I bumped into a whole bunch of them on exercise in Corsica. An automatic weapon of some sort was poked through the car window at me to ensure that I understood that the road was closed.

I didn't stop to ask how long it might be closed for.

I think tempers just flaired a bit today as things were said which need not. You did a good job of keeping order, and i think there could easily have been more posts deleted for bad language alone. I have mentioned some unofficial house rules i found from SYD the other day, so hopefully that will clarify things in future.

Have this one on me. <ale>
