Art, I am not right wing or military (we do not have any armed forces here, except a few lögreglan with gun training) but if someone does wrong they need to be punished. Having strong law and order is not for one political side it is for both and then it is only what the rulers want. Right and left wing law can be equally strange as to who it sees as the offender, victim and systems of punishment.
These people who are fighting, burning and stealing have a choice. They do not have to do this and no one is making them perform. If you chose to behave in a way that offends the people who make the laws you must expect punishing.
Do the people who live by the laws of the nation not have the expectation of protection by the nation? If they do not then there is anarchy as they will defend themselves and this would be very bad. If I work to make my live better that is my right and it is for everyone else to be responsible and respect my right. It is your right to do this as well. It is our responsibility together to protect our works and our societies from people who wish to destroy them by violent ways with no alternative. What I seen on the television is not political and not a reaction to bad conditions it is people being criminal.

Another question is what to do with these people? Great Britain has a good place to put them, St Kilda. Take them to this remote island and leave them with tools and materials to house and feed themselves for a short time and then it is for them to survive through working together to learn some responsibility.

Dan - you may not have mentioned killing them but did I mistake this comment for just giving them a nice plane trip?

Glad to see some rationality has come back into the discussion - Geitung Akureyrar - does Iceland have laws that allow violent thugs to be deported to someone else's island?

<applause> Well said Ak. I never understand why the British police are so weak when it comes to dealing with rioters. Everywhere else the rioters would get a severe smacking.
And when there are television news reports of rioting with strong police reaction the BBC and ITV always cry for the protesters.

I just think there are a lot of very angry people right now. We all know the country is in dire straits right now concerning unemployment, the economy etc, but that is no excuse for the scenes going on! Watching TV last night with the police having to hold back and watch while these people burnt anything and everything they could... watching buildings going up wondering if there was someone in there... you just start feeling helpless, frustrated and angry!

The initial reaction is these people do not deserve any sympathy and deserve everything that they have coming to them.... But we know there won't be much coming to them, they will get a slap on the wrist because the prisons are full as it is! So then you start thinking... well, when will all this happen again! The next time something happens, will it all kick off again. There are too few police, but once they arrest people, the police also know the courts will be too soft, and once they go to prison, they know the life will be no worse than their home life! Prison is no deterrent!

My my Zen - I don't think that is necessary, it is not the Police who are weak with rioters. They too have to abide by the law nobody is above it. If a police officer assaults another member of public (even athe biggest scum bag demonstrator - somebodiy elses phrase) he must answer to the Crown Prosecution and possibly in court (How about the newspaper venor that got pushed is that officer not up for Manslaughter) It is a police officers duty to protect others & property but it is also the duty of most law abiding citizens to support the Police to be able to do their duties.

This is nothing new I faced this in the 70's at Brixton & Notting Hill again in the Eighties in Tottenham. It only takes a few to start it and the others will join in, normally happens in the summer, long days plenty of drink and the Media to stir it up.

We have a very lenient legal system. Crime is not a big problem here. We have a few murders every year but more than five is not common. Most crime is vandalism and theft and not very much of that. Our bankers are a problem.
We do not deport anyone but there are some islands that could be used. St Kilda is a British possession with no inhabitants so is perfect.
