Just heard on the BBC - Abu Qatada can be deported. Happy days.

Puzzlingly though - the ECHR state that Theresa May was wrong over his appeal deadline. <confused>

    1) Yes, but the UK did adopt it.
    2) In the case of capital punishment, I can't see that happening. Protocols 6 & 13 merely do away with Article 2's exception for lawful executions. Article 2 protects the right of every person to their life - quite what murder victims 'would make of that' is anyone's guess.;)

Happy days indeed BB - although the lesson learnt is that the esteemed ECHR consider 3 months to be 3 months and 1 day...

What makes you think that Charlie - I am not sure how invading Iraq or taking part in a war in Afghanistan to support a regime that treats its women appallingly can lead you to the conclusion that I believe we should de-militarise the UK. Because a thing is not black does not make it white - and suggesting I might want something because I do not like something else is false reasoning.

Only Russia, the USA and China spend more than we do on defence. We spend £44 thousand million Why? - we spend more than France, Germany, Italy, Spain Brazil - in fact every other country in the world.

My argument is that we should defend our own realm and not interfere as a world policeman - too many people have not gotten over our role from the 19th century.

Divert £20 billion pounds from defence to high tech peaceful projects with massive apprenticeships and training for anyone under the age of 21 who wants it would cure a lot of our ills and not leave us "demilitarised"

I need help here for something I see a lot in your comments and what I read about prisons race and things like that. How long do you live there before a person is English Scottish Welsh or Irish? All the time people are referred to as British Pakistani, British Indian Afro Caribbean. If people move from one place to another it is to be away from something and it is for them to respect the new country. I am from where I am but if I lived in England my children if they were born there would be British Icelandic(!) and the next generation would only have a little bit of me left, even if they did not regard it. To me someone who is born in a place and their parents were as well is of that place not somewhere else. If I wanted to be German I would go there and take part in their culture I would not try and bring Germany here as my neighbours would not like it. I do understand that imigrating groups stay together but I can not even imagine the numbers involved in England. I saw the films of the people in Luton and to me it looked as if the white population was not the majority any more. I suppose it helps to live in a place where nobody wants to come.

The last executions here were in 1830. Two people were hanged for murder. We did have a thing called réttdræpur where someone was declared outside the law and could be killed legally but that finished before 1300. In 1928 the death penalty was stopped and now it is illegal to bring it back again. If an Íslendingur is very bad they can be in prison for life which is a minimum of 15 years. This only applies to murder kidnapping terrorism and treason, there was a bit of a problem when a man was put in prison for eight years for rape.
We do deport people who could be harmful to the public; students, environmental activists, even Bobby Fischer was nearly sent abroad.

I read somewhere that Britain is now thinking to try to steal our geothermal energy by building a large wire under the sea.

Just found this wonderful little app for my laptop & thought I'd share it.

    http://apps.conduit.com/Directory/Collections/Soccer/

At the click of a button it brings up live football scores from all over the world. Quite how I've managed to get by without knowing what's happening in the Armenian Premier League is beyond me. :)

The thing that puzzles me about the current Armenian Premier League is why Noah Kasule plays for Gandzasar rather than Ararat.

Charlie, Jersey is part of the British Isles but not of the UK. We aren't part of the European Union so a lot of people on the island aren't happy that we have European Union on the front of our passports. Also, the States of Jersey wouldn't be able to class itself as a government if we were part of the UK. We have our own laws, set our own taxes. We are a Crown Dependancy so the Queen's official title on the island is the Duke of Normandy and she has a representative on the island, the Lieutenant-Governor, who is changed every 5 years. If someone born here has both of their parents and all 4 grandparents born outside the mainland, they need to obtain a work permit to be able to work in the UK.

As I didn't grow up here, I can only go on what I've been told about the UK Government of the time "abandoning" Jersey to it's fate but my point is still valid about the member of the media saying that Jersey welcomed the Germans. I was interested in what you said about the different approaches taken by Guernesey and Alderney as Alderney, along with Sark and Herm are all part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

    The happier note is appreciated.

Just come in to find that Blackpool are a goal up at half time against Brum. 0-2 on agg.

Could it happen that Blackpool could go up at the expense of both Brum and West Ham?

Anything is possible in this crazy league.;)

Morning all , thanks H , Leo I would agree with your last point although , as an afterthought nothing speeds up technological breakthroughs as much as a war , that later have civil applications (a bit like what you see on an F1 car today you may see on a normal car a couple of years later :))
