The Cinque Terre is fantastic. We stayed at Vernazza and used it as a base for walking the trails. Then we went on to Florence and Sienna which are among are favourite places.
In Vernazza we hired a room which was basic but dirt cheap as there were no hotels to speak about.

So true, Pont. We are not into walking but we used to sit outside a little cafe in Monterosso where we were based and watch the "jolly walking types" head up the mountain trails. Brilliant!

A shameless plug for an acquaintance of ours who is taking B&B guests for the first time in his old converted farmhouse in Tuscany.

That place looks beautiful mate.

My nanna was from Siena in Tuscany, such a wonderful part of the world.

Good luck with your search, Dorset. Ireland is a really small country and literally, everybody knows everybody else or somebody who does. My bro used to work in a big plant in Amstelveen. The Irish lads there used to play a game in the canteen when a newcomer arrived. Within two minutes, somebody would know a friend, relative or acquaintance of the newbie.

Cheers Danny, that's useful to know. It's a place called Longford that we're going to. I have written to the people that live in the house where my dad was born, so just waiting for a reply. Going to do all of the obvious things like churches, school records and the town library, so I'm optimistic that I will unearth someone.

Im offskis to Finland to visit my girlfriend in august and will hopefully be going to St Petersburg with her. Which will be nice. went there last year and although the price of booze is nothing short of extorsion the food is great, the people are great and there is nothing that compares to staying in a log cabin by the lake with a sauna.

Also, hopefully going to dortmund for a weekend with a mate. Going to take in a match when we are there, either schalke or dortmund. its only €15 a ticket. IT would be rude not to
