I would like to include Denis Viollet in a best Stoke XI. I know he wasn't a local but he was marvellous player in my book. He cost around £23K from United (half a weeks wages for todays top earners at Stoke). I was 10 when he signed and I hadn't seen a player like him (Sir Stan excepted) He was quick, skilfull, could score and had one hell of a shot for a player of his build - his goal vs Spurs with Pat Jennings in goal from out on the right wing still springs to mind, I don't thing Jennings saw it!. Never missed a penalty for about 5 years! His ashes were spread onto the Britannia turf if I remember correctly.
PP - damn right. Remember him and Roy Vernon together. At one stage I think that DV was the leading goal scorer for Utd in Europe. A no nonsense good old Inside Forward was DV. Thanks for that DV
I did see Denis Violet too! And, his ashes were indeed scattered over the Britannia.. how fitting. Also, one of the survivours of the Munich air disaster.. I know a lot of guys from work/Manchester older than myself and they still insist. He was one of Manchester Utds "All time Greats" Coming from Utd fans.. That shows just how good he was. Another Legend who was also a part of Stoke's history.
