Correct. The solution is so simple yet they don't do anything about it.

Why do they need vast expanses of tarmac like that? If they are worried about grass/gravel being bad for safety, on some of the big chicanes they have at Abu Dhabi, why not have giant rumble strips/bumps the driver has to go over or weave through to rejoin the track if they want to straight line the chicane?

They will be far enough away from the racing line not to cause a problem for an errant car, but will force a driver to slow down going over them to avoid damage to a car. If a driver wants to risk rejoining the track at race speed to keep a position unfairly gained and damaging the car then they will pay for the consequences.

My gut feeling is that ultimately , the powers that be ( Were ? ) will want as many cars to finish as possible , all those sponsor with Max advertising , instead of driver

pushing to hard , etc.....

Yep, not much pushing wide goes on there.

A lot is to do with the configuration of the circuits, which lends themselves to the kind of behaviour we see with this 'racing line' bollocks. Too many chicanes and switchbacks on the 'modern' circuits which encourages drivers to take shortcuts and bail out.

I think a lot if down to the psychology of the drivers. They can consciously shove someone off the circuit because they know there is a nice big bit of tarmac for the other driver to go on to. If it was grass/gravel instead I don't think they would do that as they know the risk of an accident for the other driver would dramatically increase.
