He wasn't asking people to give up possessions but is merely asking for them to imagine life without them. A simple concept. Imagine no religion, it isn't hard to do, or understand. Imagine there's no heaven, up there, above the clouds, or no hell under the cellar. He's not saying there isn't, in fact he's suggesting there may be, but imagine there isn't. He's not saying we shouldn't have countries he's just suggesting, for a moment we imagine what it would be like without them, there may be nothing to kill or die for especially if we imagine there's no religion either.
