Oy! It can happen!! Here was my problem - the bloody white floor step on the bloody white floor. I was looking at the painting....and...umm....yeah! http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/16/arts/design/16oran.html?_r=0
Justin Wilson has saved six lives through organ donation following his passing on last night. A good man even after death.
Aren't they beautiful.? Back in the early 90's my wife and I did a round of the Paris museums and we saw those paintings back then. Fantastic. Perhaps you swooned in awe.?
You may have been there at the same time as the 'incident' then TSS! I think it would have been 1990, possibly '91. You didn't trip me, did you?
I remember like it was yesterday. I proposed to my girlfriend while on the second deck of the Eiffel Tower as we got out of the lower lift to have a look around before getting into the lift to the top. It was the first weekend of March 1990. We had a long weekend in Paris. One other thing I remember. after a day of walking throughout Paris central, we ended up in one of the cafés on the Champs d'Elysees. I ordered two halves of lager to chase down our schnapps. The waiter declared quatre-vingts francs, s'il vous plait and I stood gobsmacked [about £8 at the time, just for the two 500ml].
I went with my then-fiancée once to take her to a gig on Valentine's Day. The gig was cancelled and a bird shat on her head (and I laughed...oops) during a romantic walk by the Seine. We split up soon afterwards!
I've been shat on by seabirds twice. Once, in the 1980s in Christchurch harbour, and once in Newlyn in the 2000's. Both with a girlfriend. You don't forget those kind of things. Funnily enough, I've had another encounter with a seabird, this time in company with the girl who became my wife. We were sitting on a bench in Padstow Harbour, eating excellent fish and chips, and a f****** great herring gull swooped down over my left shoulder, bashed my face with his starboard outstretched wing and took off with my fish in batter. It was still bloody hot so he dropped it in the harbour water and never went back to it. The ****. I hope he singed his tootsies.!
Was fishing a few days ago, and a bloody pelican sauntered over and helped himself to some of my baitfish from my bucket. That'll teach me not to put the lid on straight away. My daughter enjoyed the encounter though and laughed like a loon so I made had go and buy me some more bait.
I remember driving around Paris's inner ring road a few years ago at 3 in the morning looking for a petrol station...the car was on fumes by the time I found one that was open, and then it took about four goes before the machine would read my card. I only had a few quid in actual cash so was panicking a bit. Not a fan of Paris myself as I found the city expensive and dirty, and the Parisians were rude and arrogant. Great food and wine though, and great art to lose yourself in for a few hours.
A lot of people tell me they don't like Paris for similar reasons. On the expense, yes it can be but there are areas that are reasonable to stay, eat and drink. As most tourist cities, eating in wrong areas can be pricey. My last trip there, four of us stopped at a cafe/bar on the Seine about 11am for a beer; we new it would be crazy and it was 40 euros for the 4 beers. Later that evening we were paying 3 euros a beer just by the Latin quarter not too far down the road. Generally it can be pricey though. I have found people can be rude in and around the main areas, but I found Parisians very polite away from these tourist places. Trying a few words in their language does help that - still, don't try working with them (like me) BTW, did you try driving around the centre in rush hour? That's an experience worth doing for sure!! Then you'll see rude
A few years ago we were crossing Paris from the Gare de Lyon by Metro and our line was suddenly closed because someone had jumped in front of a train. So we surfaced by Les Halles and got a taxi to our hotel across the river in Montparnasse. This involved going across the Pont Neuf in the rush hour. Never again! That same trip we stopped at a café by l'Opera and my wife had a cup of tea and I a 33cl bottle of Kronenburg. €25!
Ouch! Don't eat near anything touristy is the rule!!! Rome is similar. Eat near the colosseum and you'll be stung. Luckily when we did Rome, we went with my mate and his wife. She lived and studied in Italy for a year so knew her way round. We ate a couple of streets away from the Vatican and paid 8 euros for a pasta dish. On the Satruday evening we ate at a Pizza place in central Rome and had garlic bread starters, 4 beers, 4 pizzas and a bottle of red wine for 65 euros You really have to be careful sometimes.
Same here in Mallorca. Prices are high in bars and restaurants on the tourist trails, go into the barrios and prices are a lot more reasonable.
