Nice one No7, once the news get's out you should get a number of different species come and visit No7 Mansions, especially as they have some good cover by the looks of it. Something to watch out for though is the spilt seed can sometimes attract rats to your garden. We get them a lot although we do live next to a farm so it's to be expected here. The Great Tits don't help, I've watched them throwing out seeds until they get to the sunflower hearts which is all they are interested in. I'll update the nest box vids later, the chicks have really grown in the last ten days, must be lots of food about.
Our main issue at the moment is that although the perches are tiny the Magpies attempt to feed, shake it, **** everywhere, then get it from the grass. Seems to scare off the little birds. The strange thing is my Chihuahua will go mental at the magpie and they flee, but if he barks at the little ones, they look at him and carry on sitting in the perch lol.
incidentally, do you know what type of bird that is (think it is the same bird in both photos )? I can recognise the blue tits and the robins, but that is it lol. The think I will nip to Amazon.
I was dreading you asking me this because although I know quite a few, it's the very similar little brown birds that I find most difficult to identify. Sometimes the colouring on it's back can be a clue but as we can't see that I'm going to guess that it may be a warbler of some kind. Finches have heavier beaks for breaking seeds open, and usually have more distinctive colour. There are a number of warblers that are small and plain and are quite hard to tell apart (at least they are for me). I'm guessing it could be a willow warbler and although they have a tinge of green on them it's not always obvious. On top of that you have a wide variation between male and female* and then juveniles at this time of year which haven't developed their full colours yet. So it's not easy, this is very helpful https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/ and even gives an audio clip as well. * As in human life, male birds are also the most eye catching whereas the females tend to be a bit dull by comparison.
If like me, you know nothing about birds I can recommend the Merlin app. The sound identification is marvelous and it's free too. https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/
I used to think that I knew quite a lot of bird species until I went on a RSPB field trip. They knew everything about everything and I then realised how little I did.
I tried teaching him the art of playing poker, but he’s not a very clever dog. Every time he gets a good hand his ****ing tail starts wagging.
Edition 4 of the Blue Tits (nest) box set, season 1. In this edition things are hotting up in the crowded Blue Tit nest box. Mum and Dad are working themselves into a frenzy looking after the children who do nothing except sit around all day and eat. Two of them sit close to the door so they get first dibs when deliveroo turn up. Some changes are on the way though and it may be time for the children to leave the nest, it can't be long now. This is a rare view of all five as quite often two or three are under the two big ones who hog pole position for the grub. The others are smaller but seem to be healthy, so some food must be getting through to them as well. There's a bonus shot at the end where you can hear mum Blue Tit say "I've even got to wipe his arse for him".
