Yeah, I'm getting it quite a lot. If you click on the green box at the top that says "Retry for a live version" it usually works. If it's like the other error clearing your cookies etc. might help. I'll go over to the mods' board to see what they say. Edit: this is a post from Mick the site owner which I hope explains the problem:
There's an article on the Guardian about a report into the affect of poverty on school kids and one kid said his/her mum said that she couldn't afford £20 something for him/her to go on a school trip. The deeply cynical side of me was thinking as I read that 'yes, but I bet she can afford to spend more than that a week on alcohol/tobacco'. Is it wrong of me to think that?
Yes, because you are making an assumption based upon an atittude that describes a stereotypical type. The idea is to be open minded, especially at your age. Leave the close minded ignorance, because we think we've learned everything there is to know, for people of my era. Ta.
Whilst there are people for whom £20 is a lot, I do understand your cynicism. I often think that when I see a 'poor' person covered in tattoos....not cheap. There used to be a non-PC concept of the deserving and un-deserving poor...may not be able to say it these days, but it is true. Some of it can be due to ignorance about money...my Dad was never unemployed and spent all his money on the family, but money had to be stretched...my Mum altered clothes from charity shops for example. No sense of priorities can be a major problem...you don't need the latest technology for a start, you don't need regular nights out, you don't need pre-prepared foods either. The true riches for any child are good parents.
My view is based on experience. I grew up on a council estate in Portsmouth. My parents had a similar or a lower income than our neighbours, but we appeared richer than most of them because my parents put us first. Our house was warm, clean, and we were well dressed (even though the clothes may have been second hand). We were given books and attention and encouraged to get an education (that my parents had sadly been denied). So I admit to a prejudice based on experience.
Speak for your self Mr Stain ! Not all older people are ignorant and think they know everything. Just as neither do all youngsters.
Great sense as usual Fran. Echo's my upbringing - other that it wasnt in Portsmouth i might add ! However i did/do know like-minded people from Buckland area of Portsmouth and they were also the salt of the earth.
I didn't mean to suggest that my parents were alone in being good parents....just that there are many that could do a hell of a lot better. I know several doing a great job raising kids on little more than minimum wage and, believe me, people doing that feel more strongly about shysters than the middle class do. Their attitude is if I can do it, so can they.
Rich American, John Moores, looking at investing in Swansea. What is it about Americans investing in English football?
Andy Murray is playing superbly against the man he lost to at Wimbledon, Dimitrov. He just needs one more game to win and progress to the Paris quarter finals and perhaps more importantly, qualify for the ATP World tour finals next month.
