For anyone who cares Prince Harry is getting married. Does this mean a bank holiday on the wedding day?
https://news.sky.com/story/how-much-does-the-royal-family-cost-10477000 As each person spends 52 p a year on the monarchy (excluding security), I think we'll cope. And that is ignoring their value to the tourist trade.
Would rather have a monarch than some ex-politician as president....less divisive. Think Donald Trump. Costs are about the same. People always forget that palaces belonging to the monarchy (rather than to the Queen in her own right) would cost us in upkeep whether the royal family are there or not. I think it is more likely that an heir will turn the throne down than that we will get rid of the monarchy. Ignoring a sense of duty (which the young are less likely to feel IMO), I can see a prince or princess saying blow this for a game of soldiers, I'd rather live a private life.
I don’t have too many objections to the main royals, but the lesser ones, such as that oik Andrew, really should be made to earn a living. I guess my main objection is actually the National Anthem, because my allegiance is to my country and not the reigning monarch. I won’t sing it.
Apparently Charles plans to reduce the number of royals on the payroll so to speak. Andrew isn't happy (reportedly) because his two daughters will be excluded. I agree that there is no reason for them not to work outside the royal family....after all they aren't exactly poor.
I have a lot in common with Andrew, we were both born in February 1960 (there is a conspiracy theory that we were swapped at birth) We both got 3 A levels (but he never made it to University). Both had successful careers and retired early. Both married lunatics and had two daughters. Both got divorced in 1996. We've both gone on to represent our country in foreign climes, both had our financial difficulties. Only difference being his mum gives him about half a million quid a year and I've just finished paying back a loan from my mum at 200 quid a month.
Mount Agung looks set to blow. It's already been spouting a ****load of ash and lahars have been flowing down the slopes. I hope everyone has obeyed the 12km exclusion zone because if it does blow it will generate a huge pyroclastic flow like it did in 1964. Edit: just read that tens of thousands of people are refusing to leave their homes.
They showed some people on the news who hadn't left because they didn't have any money for transport. Why the hell aren't the authorities laying on free transport?
Same here. I don't wish the Monarch ill, but I certainly have no allegiance to the Royal Family They are pretty much the main cause of the class problem we still have in GB. And as far as the National Anthem is concerned, no I can't sing it either. It accentuates the subservient nature that British citizens have to their figurative head, who really is only there by an accident of birth. When you look at some of the half decent national anthems, like New Zealand's, arguably Australia's, Canada's, and a few others [even the USA one is OK, only they are far too keen to sing it at every sodding opportunity, which kind of blunts the attraction], our misdirected dirge comes a very long way down the pecking order. But there is the sunny side to this. Yes, you guessed it. Me and Theresonlyoneno7 have two to choose from. And the other one is a rousing cracker.
Found out a surprising fact today. The British State pension is £122 per week. Not bad. The German State pension is £350 per week. WTF.!?!
