Yeah, well it wouldn't surprise me if Simple Minds were influenced by The Doors, anyway. First Simple Minds track I came across which I thought might be similar. Blimey, I'd forgotten how good early Simple Minds stuff is: Seeing Out The Angel
Have also just seen the video of the Bianchi crash...there's a steward just behind the yellow truck thing - do we know if he was okay? (Assume yes becuase we'd have heard about it otherwise)
Hahaha, the comparisons are all valid. We're getting everything from Radiohead to Bowie, via Kate Bush and PJ Harvey. I think that means she's probably quite individual, which is a good thing. For what it's worth, it's probably everyone involved in the project's favourite track (although there's a new demo that's just come through that might change that) but is the one that's going to be most difficult to get blog buy-in with as it's so long. People don't *do* long tracks these days. It's her favourite, my favourite, the band's favourite. But not the PR guys Next one we let out there will probably be the chilled, beautiful 'crossover' track that we have which should be pretty easy for everyone to like!
Yeah, really interesting track, I can hear elements of Gabriel's early solo work in it as well which is ok with me!
Thanks though guys - is interesting to get the feedback. She's going to be Artrocker's artist of the week from tomorrow so we can announce the song properly then.
I feel privileged! I've had it on a couple of times now and it's great! Real atmosphere to it and I really love her voice. I want to give it time on it's own so I can properly appreciate it though, because thus far it's been on while I've been buzzing about doing things.
There's two parts that kill me - when she sings "We have been waiting since the start of the lie" after the guitar riff, and the part where it breaks down as she sings "I won't follow" - bristling with attitude. If I say so myself!
If you would like some quick feedback on how it strikes me, I guess that if I had to describe it I'd say sort of a trip-hop Siouxsie Sioux. More arty than goth, but she does have a rather "dark" voice which she uses to good effect. I guess I can see where the Radiohead comparison is coming from-- their later stuff or really more like some of Yorke's solo work. The beats aren't quite as twitchy/glitchy, but it has that similar feel to it where the vocals seem to be floating over the instruments rather than alongside them. Sort of like double vision where things just don't quite match up and swim in and out of focus. Gives it a bit of a distant, disconcerting feel though that gets resolved alongside a mood shifts towards something more NIN/industrial later. It reminds some of the Sucker Punch soundtrack (which was generally decent and unlike the movie somewhat well received by critics). This is not the kind of thing I tend to listen to, but it's quite decent. Definitely good headphones music.
Well, I found my headphones, and... wow! There is so much more going on there than was apparent at the first hearing. The production quality is stunning, as TSS says, fairly sparse but brilliantly mixed, and I love the synth background in the first section. Then that guitar riff.. oh my. And the drums and bass underpinning it all. I've left the vocals until last, because they are just magnificent. She must have had some sort of classical training to maintain such fantastic breath control, the long notes are faultless. Apart from the other musical comparisons, all of which I can agree with, I'd just like to throw in Edith Piaf, if only for the torch singer passion that comes across with every note. Loved it.
She's never had a singing lesson in her life, genuinely She's artist of the week here (though I'm not convinced they get it!) - http://www.artrocker.tv
Front page of the Indy on Sunday was brilliant, by the way. Here it is. please log in to view this image
I always love looking at the 2nd half of the year, this year was quite incredible though with so many people leaving. ive left mine on September
There is still an arm that I haven't identified. Did anyone else leave? I lost count somewhere in July!
Bianchi's family have thanked everyone for their kind thoughts, but have confirmed that he has the worst kind of brain injury. Apparently can result in a persistent vegetative state. Thoughts with him.
****, that's bad news, but having seen the accident no surprise really. We've been very fortunate in terms of injuries and fatalities in F1 for so long that it comes as a shock. I hope there's not a knee-jerk reaction though - the sport is a lot safer now than horse riding, skiing etc, and of course the risk is part of the attraction both for spectators and competitors (and is why they're paid so much). Dreadful news though.
