RIP Pele. My dad met him once on a plane and got his autograph for me. I’ve lost it, because I’m a twat. One of the greatest players ever, no doubt.
Some years ago, the BBC replayed a commentary of Brazil v England from 1964, courtesy of Kenneth Wolstenholme. There was a moment in the match where Pele completely bamboozled the England defence that left Ken astounded and simply added the comment "What a Genius!" That is as good a tribute as any about Pele.
R.I.P to the great footballer and humanitarian, Edson Arantes do Nascimento... Here's the story of his life of which he was an executive producer...
RIP Pele. My only claim to fame with him is that I snogged his ex girlfriend (she was a lot younger than him) in 1996 in Greece. I was working as a waiter in a cocktail bar when I met her. Anyway, IMO the GOAT - better than others since him. Thanks for the memories Pele and defining football.
Pele reminiscing about his illustrious career; "Winning three World Cups was the greatest honour of my career, but my biggest regret in life was not catching that bastard who snogged my girlfriend while I was out the back having a piss."
Just heard the news. Until Maradona, and then later Messi and C. Ronaldo, came along, there was no question of who was the GOAT. Completely inspirational and mesmerising skills, and a thoroughly decent human being. RIP Pele
True story, she was Swedish and called Marie, my 'chat up' line was "I have kissed a carrot, but never a swede". Women were so much easier to please back then.
I think Pele was the greatest of all time. You never read any bad press about him and there was never any of the antics as was the case with Maradona. He was the star player for a Brazil team that played football the way people wanted to watch. The picture of Pele together with Bobby Moore where they are congratulating each other sums up for me the fact that football is about being sporting and showing respect.
It crossed my mind that Pele would not have existed had it not been for former Saint Charlie Miller taking football to Brazil. Is there any record of Pele ever being a guest at Southampton. I am not aware of this which is a shame.
