I agree - I didn't think he was good before his appointment and think he is crap at domestic managing, but as an international manager I think he has proved himself.

Sometimes people just fit. Think Adkins with us, Koeman with us, to a certain extent Howe with Bompey.

Some say he has been lucky with the draw etc in competitions, but I say you also make your own luck. The harder you work the luckier you get. Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

I think even if we win it (lets face it is is nailed on now Tom has said there is no way we will), he will give up after the tournament anyway.

He will definitely get the chance - just think back to the mood of the nation last year and in 2018. What a great time to be alive :)

    It's coming home.

I think Southgate is more or less just the face of the operation, around whom there is an absolute entourage of coaches and analysts. After years of failure, the FA are throwing a lot into St. George's Park, grassroots, and whatever else it takes, to bring England success. I don't think Southgate is therefore particularly responsible for any successes/failures. All that is required of him is to be the nice guy, and probably a bit of a 'yes man' for the FA. Another more established coach might jeopardise this (think of the disaster that was Capello). Not really sure, this is just my theory of course.

Anyway, last night was no more than a pre-season friendly. Worse, a post-season friendly. Anyone sh*tting themselves because of it needs to calm down. If Saints lost to say, Forest Green 4-0 in pre-season, it would feel a bit weird, but no one would be calling for the manager to go.

I think the squads inability to play cohesively over these Nations League games probably means we will go ‘safe’ and play mainly the same line up/shape as the Euros.

Maybe TAA and Foden in for Trippier and Mount to try and add some extra fluency?

Sidenote: Why is Mount so good for Chelsea and so poor for England? (You could say this about others at the mo, but it seems to be more consistently the case for Mount).

TAA won't play as Southgate clearly doesn't trust him defensively as he's too prone to ball watching. James/Walker will be the starting RB.

I think you are right, I am just trying to think of ways we could remain ‘solid’ whilst breaking our 6 hour duck.

James is our best right back in fairness. TAA is great if he doesn't have much defending to do like with Liverpool, and his main responsibility is creativity. Walker is pretty useless in terms of defending but suits City as his only useful attribute is pace & power and that gets them out f trouble when teams counter attack against them.

James is good going forward and can actually defend, certainly the best all round RB out of the 3.

Mount is crap for England as Southgate plays him too deep and out of position.

Chelsea usually play 4231 and he sits in the middle of the the attacking midfield 3. Southgate uses him as a CM in a 433 or similar. He isn't a natural CM like Bellingham or Rice, he is best when he is around the opposition goal creating chances. It is a mix of Southgate trying to fit a square peg in a round hole because he uses a different system, but plus we are already inundated with talented attacking midfielders like Grealish and Foden.

That is one of Southgate's biggest mistakes IMO - with the attacking midfield talent we have we should play 4231 and make the most out of Foden, Grealish, Mount Sterling etc. playing behind Kane.
