VAR will be fine for out and out mistakes....wrong player, clear hand ball or not etc, but, if it is unclear, stick with the ref and no arguments should be the rule. In tennis they accept that technology cannot be 100% but once you accept it, you go with it. And in cricket, unclear decisions stick with the umpire. I suppose it will take a while to decide on the way to go in football.
I’m not arguing against technology, far from it, but sometimes, as you say, the video evidence is ambiguous, and I agree that’s when the decision should rest with the person in the pitch. In cricket, though, DRS often leads to bad decisions because the on-field umpires don’t want to take responsibility. There were example during the Ashes series when batsmen were given out caught on referral, when the umpire wasn’t sure, and the third umpire was deceived by a spurious spike on RTS when nothing came up on Hot Spot. That all needs clearing up, and we don’t want football to go down the same route. The technology is not the problem, it’s the people interpreting the data.
It feathered his thigh. We pay good money for that sort of thing here in Brighton, I'll have you know.
So they let me down by not scoring away at villa for a 900 quid Acca last week , but go in at HT beating Man City away !!
Indeed. VAR is a little different from say, goal line technology. GLT can't be argued against because there is no human element. In VAR there is, so there will be debate. But this will settle down. Eventually, those viewing the evidence from multiple angles will get better at it, and referees on the pitch will know when to stick with their judgement or give over to the assistant viewing the evidence from multiple angles. They've already been training for 12 months I believe, but not in the pressure cooker of competitive football. But eventually, when everyone realises that VAR will end up producing fairer results, the general heated discussion will die down. You will always get the Luddite, who is quite happy to see ManU beat Saints in a League Cup Final 3-2 [when the result could have been oh so different had the match been played 12 months later], until their side is on the wrong end of it. And as for slowing down the game by a few seconds.? So people would rather their team lose a Cup Final because they couldn't be bothered to wait for a referee to make a correct decision rather than a quick one.? Besides which. VAR is already part of the Bundesliga and Serie A, and is doing fine. I don't see where the problem is. And it'll get better and quicker because humans will get better and quicker at it.
1-1 now A Man City supporting mate of mine said beat 2 teams they’ve played this year have been Wolves and Bristol City. Should just relegate the bottom 10 in the PL and bring up the top 10 in the Champ
We didn't lose the cup final because of that decision, we lost due to piss poor defending. People really need to get over it ffs.
Couldn't agree more. The whole complexion of the game would have changed if that had gone in - we could have lost 5-1.
Not sure if you are being sarcastic so apologies if you are but this I can’t agree with. Yes we didn’t go on to win the final, but the unbridled joy we all felt for a month was the furthest thing from meaningless. The city had a spring in its step and we had the bragging rights for the next few weeks. We had the country cheering that goal. We couldn’t stop playing that goal over and over again. That goal meant to so much that we simply brushed off the 5-0 defeat to Arsenal, a result fans would normally be appalled at. But no, we laughed it off because of that goal. We may not have won the ultimate prize, but that goal meant so much, and still does.
Just that we were already winning 1-0 thanks to Redmond. I'm never really sure if people forget that or just like to celebrate Long's moment. Either way it's mainly because I think the EFL Cup is a waste of time. Probably easier just to ignore me.
