I would love Arsenal to do well but with Jack Wilshere there it is impossible to support them. Atlético look very formidable, Athletic Bilbao are struggling. Marseilles and Lyon are more than useful. A Portuguese team are always loveable but rarely get a mention these days.
I just have a gripe with one Arsenal player due to his conduct on the Arsenal bus after the Cup final. He has never apologised for that, and I am surprised that a club like Arsenal did not take a stand and make him apologise. It contrasts sharply with Emlyn Hughes and Liverpool, who sang stupid songs about Everton after Liverpool won the CL in 1977 was made to apologise for his crassness. It says everything about the two clubs. Liverpool have high standards, whereas Arsenal .... might not have.
The same could be applied to Darren Anderton, however Darren Anderton, when fit, was a very good footballer and everything that Wilshere is not.
They did warn him, and he did apologise. I kind of liked that anyway, bit naughty yeah but in an era where everyone moans about the disconnect between players and fans and them living in a bubble etc. And when a player shows something like that (though unprofessional of course) he gets slaughtered from all corners.
There´s connecting and connecting. Some of these prima donnas could well take a leaf out of the Armfield and Bobby Robson way to conduct themselves.
Jack Wilshere is a genuine, polite and affable bloke. And there endeth my propaganda. But seriously, I had similar feeling towards him as what has been said above, previously, but not any more. He’s also a very, very gifted player. Glad he’s finally overcome his injury woes. (touches wood)
So apart from the Southampton match, there are some great looking fixtures in the Championship - PNE v Fulham and Villa v Wolves (40,000+). This seems to be the weekend for "derbies", with Manchester United v Liverpool, Arsenal v Watford, Millwall v Brentford, Forest v Derby, Rangers v Celtic and the big one Hibs and Hearts.
Not sure Hibs v Hearts will ever be bigger than the Old Firm match Ides, as much as the loonies on both sides might want it to be. Out of the others you mention, only Forest v Derby is a real “derby”, the others are just matches, one of them between bitter rivals maybe, but not derbies.
I was being a tad flippant with my choices. We have a "derby" of sorts against Bournemouth, yet Watford and Arsenal are nearer to each other than Pompey and Saints.
My other team Finn Harps got their season off to a slightly disappointing 1 all draw at home to Shelbourne in League of Ireland Division 1. Was a rusty performance after ridiculously having the first 3 games posponed! The joys of summer football! The only player ye might know is ex Celtic and Norn Iron international Paddy McCourt who is still as mercurial as ever! Also I play my first GAA match since moving over to England today...Should be fun!
Absolutely this. I warmed to Wilshire on that occasion, and would have no objection to, say, Josh Sims, singing "are you watching Pompey scum" from an open topped bus - as we parade the FA Cup round Southampton in May.
