the 4-0 defeat was a poor game by us. i remember it was a night game and it pissed down pretty much all game. i was soaked! i was a volunteer helping the groundsman that season. i had a pass which allowed me on to the pitch at half time to help the pitch recover! i was soaked and i had white trainers in too. wasnt white after and i had puddles in them too.

Funny how more people seem to remember that 4-0 defeat than the others, when they were much more recent!

Scunthorpe United defender Andrew Boyce has rejoined the Mariners on an initial one month loan deal.

Boyce joined the Mariners on a loan deal last March and some assured defensive performance helped Town to reach the Conference play-off semi finals in May.

He began his career as a trainee with Doncaster Rovers before moving to non-league Gainsborough Trinity. After helping Trinity reach the Conference North play-off final he earned a move to Lincoln City in May 2012. After playing 60 matches for the Imps in the Conference Premier Boyce moved on loan to Scunthorpe United in November 2013.

He is expected to be included in the Town squad which travels to Brigg Town on Tuesday night (7pm).

Sad to say my heart says a win for the Gas (wishful thinking), the reality is that my brain anticipates a 2 nil win for the Fish Finger mobsters.

    Come on you Blues !

GRIMSBY Town came through their final pre-season test as they beat Brigg Town at The Hawthorns.

A Town side made up of a mixture of first-teamers and youth players got off to a good start, with Jon-Paul Pittman and Lewis Bemrose giving them a 2-0 lead within 18 minutes.

The home side got one back through Josh Nichol before the break but the Mariners were rarely troubled as they eased through the rest of the game to claim the victory.

Town started in a 3-5-2 formation, with Callum Bastock in goal and wing-backs Paul Walker and Paul Bignot ahead of Toto Nsiala, Shaun Pearson and Ellis Humble.

Josh Venney, Scott Neilson and Caine Winfarrah formed the midfield trio, with Pittman alongside Bemrose up front.

Winfarrah almost broke the deadlock five minutes in but his shot from 25 yards hit both posts before coming back out to safety.

Five minutes later, the Mariners were ahead when a free kick from the left was half-cleared before being lofted back into the danger zone for PITTMAN to steer into the net.

Town doubled their advantage on 18 minutes after a good build-up down the right. The ball was pulled back for BEMROSE and he slammed it home from inside the penalty area.

Venney, who had impressed in the centre of midfield, went close to making it 3-0 when his curling shot from long range narrowly missed the target.

Then a low cross from Winfarrah led to a snap-shot from Pittman being well stopped by Brigg keeper Jody Barford.

The hosts had rarely threatened throughout the half but they pulled one back 10 minutes before the break through NICHOL, who got on the end of a cross from the left to head past Bastock.

The Mariners looked to restore their two-goal cushion and they went close with a flowing move on 38 minutes, which saw the ball played to Pittman, who controlled it before Bemrose shot onto the roof of the net.

The young striker was then unable to get on the end of a low cross-shot from Bignot on the left just before half-time, meaning Town were forced to settle for a one-goal lead at the interval.

Callum Jennings replaced Pittman before the restart, while Ryan Musselwhite, son of former Scunthorpe goalkeeper Paul, replaced Barford between the Brigg sticks two minutes short of the hour.

Jordan Barnett came on for Venney on 60 minutes and as the half wore on, neither side looked likely to add to the scoring.

Chances were few and far between at both ends and neither keeper was seriously troubled over the course of the 45 minutes.

Josh Sunter replaced Nsiala for the last few minutes before the final whistle signalled the end of Town’s pre-season action, with the serious stuff now set to get under way when they travel to Bristol Rovers for the Conference opener on Saturday.

Town: Bastock, Nsiala (Sunter,87), Humble, Pearson, Bignot, Walker, Venney (Barnett, 60), Winfarrah, Neilson, Bemrose, Pittman (Jennings, 46).

We talk to the manager ahead of Saturday's opening game of the season

With just two days to go, Darrell Clarke is looking forward to a new season and a fresh start.

The manager has been impressed with the attitude and work rate of his team in pre-season, but now everyone is ready to get competitive games underway.

He said: “As a group we are looking forward to it; new season, fresh start. We have had a good pre-season programme and the feeling in the squad is good.

“Everyone starts with a clean sheet on zero points, and I am trying to rebuild a football club which has hit the lowest point in it’s history.

“I feel like there is a better mentality amongst this group, and there is definitely a better work rate and work ethic. From day one, since they came in for pre-season the attitude has been fantastic.”

Rovers kick off the season at home to Grimsby, a side who are one of the favourites for promotion this year.

Darrell said: “This is a great game for us, they are everybody’s favourites to get promoted this year as they have been amongst the play offs the last few years.

“Paul Hurst has done a great job up there. But we are at home, so away we go.”

The manager has a full fit squad to choose from for the game, and although Jamie Turley failed his medical, there are still a couple of players under consideration.

Darrell said: “I have no injuries, Tom Lockyer has trained all week and I have a fully fit squad to choose from.

“We had Jamie Turley assessed, and he didn’t pass his medical, he is still 6-8 weeks away. He is still a player I want to bring to the club when he is fit.

“He wants to come in a couple of days a week, without any wages being paid, to get himself fit and ready to go for when he can play.

“We were never going to be paying a player that didn’t pass a medical. We will assess him when he comes in and having another look at him nearer the time.

“I offered Angelo Balanta a deal, but he has decided not to accept it.

“Duncan Culley is still training with the squad, he has done ok, but is a little rough round the edges.

“We have a practice match today and I will have a look at him in training tomorrow, and then I will make a decision.

Angelo Balanta has been on trial with quite few league clubs so it's not surprising he's turned us down.

By this time tomorrow we will either be top of the table if we win or draw <party>

But we will be rock bottom of the conference league if we lose <wah>

Imagine the scenes at the Mem after full time if we are bottom of the table <yikes>

Grimsby Town re-sign striker Alan Connell in short-term deal

Grimsby Town have re-signed striker Alan Connell on a short-term contract.

The 31-year-old was a free agent after finishing last season with Northampton Town, where he failed to score in 16 appearances.

He enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career with the Mariners, scoring 25 goals in 46 league games in 2010/11 before joining Swindon.

Paul Hurst's side start their Conference Premier campaign against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

All you need to know ahead of tomorrow's game

Bristol Rovers will be going into the opening game of the Vanarama Conference tomorrow looking to put the disappointment of last season behind them.

Over the summer Darrell has assembled a squad made up of a mix of experience and youth, and everyone at the club is ready to get the season underway.

Opposition: Grimsby go into the opening game of the season as one of the favourties to gain promotion back into the Football League this season. The Mariners will be without Nathan Arnold, Jon-Paul Pittman, Scott Neilson, Shaun Pearson, and Aristote Nsiala for tomorrow's game.

Opposition View: Former Rovers midfielder Craig Disley told the Grimsby Telegraph: "This is my fourth season with Grimsby Town.

"I came here to get promoted and I haven't done that yet and if I leave this club without having done it, I'll see it as a failure.

"I desperately want to get this club back into the league, as do all the other lads and the gaffer.

"I've got a really optimistic feeling about the season ahead, but I'm sure there will be plenty of other players at clubs around the league feeling exactly the same way."

Darrell Clarke’s Comments: “As a group we are looking forward to it; new season, fresh start.

From day one, since they came in for pre-season the attitude has been fantastic.

“This is a great game for us, they are everybody’s favourites to get promoted this year as they have been amongst the play offs the last few years.

“Paul Hurst has done a great job up there. But we are at home, so away we go.”

Last Meeting: The last meeting between the two sides was in February 2007, with Grimbsy running out 4-3 winners. The last meeting at the Memorial Stadium was in August 2006 with Rovers taking the three points with a 1-0 victory.

Team News: Darrell Clarke has a fully fit squad to choose from for this opening encounter.
