    We weren't at our best...Cotts

    Manager plays down table-topping display.

Steve Cotterill was quick to play down City’s rise to the top of Sky Bet League One after a comfortable third straight victory.

Strikes from Aaron Wilbraham, Mark Little and Kieran Agard are unlikely to feature in any Goal of the Season shortlists come May, but were more than enough to see off ten-man Doncaster Rovers, who lost midfielder Harry Forrester early in the second half when already two down.

A rare goalless draw for Peterborough United meant City leapfrogged Posh to reach the divisional summit, but the boss was keen to stress his team had still not hit top form.

“It wasn’t our best performance,” was Cotterill’s honest view, speaking to Bristol City Player.

“They’ve got some very good players, Doncaster, and they did very well in the first half with 11 men.

“We needed to stay organised because they don’t play a conventional 4-2-3-1 – the wide players pop up in pockets and at times they have five players in the middle of the park.

“We knew that would give them a good percentage of the ball and we just had to make sure we stayed organised with that, which was the other side of us that we haven’t always had to show.

“I think the second half made the game a bit null and void really (with the sending off), but we deserved our win today.

“It’s nice to be top of the league and I’d rather be top of the league than bottom of the league – the pressure is at the bottom for sure, I can tell you that now.

“The pressure of being top of the league is a fantastic pressure and we’ll welcome it.”
