If Thatcher had attempted a political solution to the invasion it might've ended without any British soldiers losing their lives. If she'd had the nerve to get shot of the place, as she wanted to, the problem would never have arisen. As you say it's now become so messy there's no way out.
Dock them 9 points in the World Cup Group stage, and I'm sure FIFA could find some bull **** on Brazil, Spain, Italy, Germany, France and dock them points, that way we may have a chance of winning the thing. My Brother still won't buy/eat corned beef from Argentina. As for the banner, is there an actual rule for that? I think the rule was just for on T-Shirts with crap on under their strip when they score a goal, but I havnt actually looked into it.
The people of the falkland voted and it should be left as such. Shame these Latin countries don't believe in democracy like we do. Look at the Catalans and Spain. Look at the disgraceful way the spaniards treat Gibraltar! The eu will go to war against Russia but do **** all to protect British interests. As a country we should start flexing some muscle. Complain to FIFA re. Argentina and making huge complaints to the eu and maybe withholding funding to the eu until they act on our behalf. Hit them where it hurts!
We took the place by military force on more than one occasion iirc, like we did with half the world ........ not really that democratic I remember Germany pulling the same stunt in Poland a few years back.
The majority of settlers who occupied the abandoned islands were Scots, so we can pass the problem over to Mr Fish if he gets his way, now that would be interesting.
A banner saying 'those that lost their lives on both sides!' That should get them Argies feeling a bit sheepish!
I get the feeling that, if no oil was found, it would become a hot potato everyone would want to drop.
But wasnt Latin America basically created by force? By that reckoning Argentina should give their land back to whichever tribes were living there before the Spanish turned up! (I'm not really clued up on south american history) Or am I being stupid!?? Most of the world has changed hands by force at some point or another!
I live jolly close to the IOW and it's a bit of an unusual place to be honest, I don't think the Argies would care for it. The Corkheads were still worshiping goats long after the rest of the south had converted to Christianity.
If I remember correctly, geographical surveys of the area prior to the Argentinian invasion, showed huge oilfields in and around the islands. I wonder if that was a factor of the Junta and Thatcher's decision making process at the time FIFA must act to punish Argentina, otherwise a precedent will be established and this and future tournaments will be a farce.
That's the problem mate, history gets more complicated the further back you go. It's just a bit naive to believe that the Falklands are British for any other reason than our acquisition by brute force. I'd guess that, if the islanders didn't wave the flag and toast the Queen before dinner, people in this country would soon start to wonder. If they showed any interest in talking to the Argentinians a lot of us would turn against them.
Bit unfair but up to you if you think that way. I'm not denying the effort or courage of anyone who was sent there, Northern Ireland, Iraq/Iran, Afghanistan or anywhere else. IMO, the place has nowt to do with us and we only cling onto it because of the promise of oil reserves. Otherwise we'd have let it go years before you ever went there.
We've "clung" onto the islands for the last 200 years near enough. Doubt whether the alleged oil reserves have ever come into things during that time, until lately. You can't defend a country taking it by force in modern times. Argentina were aggressors and were put in their place by our forces in 1981. I reckon you're being disrespectful to the people who fought and died there.
since time began land has changed hands by force and it will continue to do so. Who the islands "belong " to is very clear . The country which can take it by force and keep it. The Argies should either attempt this again , with better military tactics , or shut the hell up about it. If you want it Mr Mascherano ,stop crying about it , take off your stripey footy shirt , put you combats on and come and get it. Its ours until you kick us out , the end.
Be interesting to know the thoughts of the Argentine Premier league based players when they were asked/told to stand behind the said banner
