i'm afraid he didn't, as i had already googled it, as well as looking at several other sites. i am aware of the previous name of the club, but there is nothing in the wiki entry that says that the a in afc bournemouth stands for athletic rather than association. nor has anything else i've found on any other site. i had always believed it to stand for association and it had never occurred to me to question that in the 43 years preceding your post.

i concede that you must have come by your information somehow and would be interested in corroboration, one way or the other.

How about you provide a link where it suggests it means Association then? If you can't find one, I would suggest the A does actually refer to 'Athletic' :emoticon-0148-yes:

i always believed it was the same afc as everyone else's since back in 1972 i hadn't been made aware that some clubs are only fc rather than afc. i recall nothing from 1972 suggesting it wasn't. i await further evidence and accept that i may have assumed wrongly.

i have a vague memory that the name change was partly intended to put bournemouth first of the league clubs alphabetically (afc preceding aldershot) and wonder whether an afc including "athletic" might have been placed after one including "association". perhaps not, and irrelevant as no other league club followed suit.
 
the fa's website says the company name is a.f.c. bournemouth limited. companies house says it is afc bournemouth limited, without the full stops.

i feel i'm being led towards the conclusion that the afc has never officially stood for anything at all.

It wasn't to put it first. It was thought it was more snappy and modern. The club was called Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic Football Club. So they were an FC not Association Football Club. The AFC was simply a case of putting Athletic Football Club before the name instead of after as far as the playing name went.
Reference you being unaware regarding FC and AFC, surprisingly few clubs are AFC in comparison to FC.
We adopted the AFC to distinguish ourselves from the rugby club who were FC when FC covered a number of codes of football. The same with Leeds United who were formed after the rugby club. Yet conversely Sunderland with no other clubs in the city are AFC.
 
I remember the former name as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic Association Football Club. We used that when playing football hangman.

They were grateful that the owner shortened the name to AFC Bournemouth ;)

We never had google or Wikipedia in those days to verify things ;)

Even in these days I have no need of Google or Wiki - I have a wife who knows EVERYTHING :emoticon-0138-think

Yes, I must admit the fact he doesn't realise Hull Tigers is longer than Hull City would be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous. The saddest thing about all of this is that it is STILL not going away. All the talk of ingoings and outgoings is interesting, but this just casts a shadow over everything. I don't know how this one gets a happy ending but it still feels a long way off at the moment. I assume he will try again next year - hopefully calling the people who voted against him 'Amateurs ' is not a winning strategy...

And that's what I'm pinning my hopes on. Just maybe, Allam doesn't plan to push for the name change again and that's why he isn't worried about slating the FA?
