I really not sure where the defender was supposed to put his foot after playing the ball..... it was nasty looking especially in slow motion, but it looked accidental in real time.....

At first glance it looked like he was going for the ball, and the guy ran into his foot...but the ball had gone, and his studs were up and it could be argued he followed through intentionally. Either way...good that England's next opponents are playing an extra 30 minutes.

The Ukrainian player is still hobbling his way round the side of the pitch, so looks like some damage was done.

Well done England and well done Southgate, that was a tense afternoon.

I have a couple of reservations about some of the logic regarding free kicks and yellow cards.
Early on in the game Germany were awarded a free kick on the edge of the England box. Declan Rice was given a yellow card. But the German
player ( can't remember who ) stuck his leg out to make Rice run into it. If anything the German player technically fouled Rice.
In the second half Maguire was shown a yellow card and a free kick was awarded to Germany, but it was an accidental coming together. Maguire didn't attempt to foul him. It would seem that any contact in or around the penalty box is disproportionally punished in favour of the attacking side.
