Defense is the key. Sterling has just said it
Do not concede,and score 1.

Greece won the Euros with that mentality.

So ..Lyndon gets to get a bit of a holiday ( hurrah)

And Todd Kane doesn't quite live up to his "worth-13-million-tag" in the other game ( have I got that right?)

Are we happy winning this tournament by not conceding but scoring "one more goal than you".

Yes I think we might be.

The next game is the important one. Win that and we are on our way

Disappointing second half. BUT … job done. Well done England.
We’ve done what’s needed without being spectacular.
Southgate is seeing more options now. Next game will be a rollercoaster … but … keep a clean sheet and score 1 and we move on.
Come on u Rrrrrrs… errr I mean England!!!

Still a load of cobblers being spouted on this thread I see.
"I wouldn't play Sterling".
"Saka isn't that good".

Saka man of the match. Another fantastic English youngster.
Sterling scored in 2 out of 3 group games.

**** me.
Get behind them.

Next game is huge.

Thanks for the input.

Sod the results, we are dreadful to watch. Boring, safe and lacking creativity. It’s dull. Two of our three games have been the worst I’ve sat through and I’ve seen a fair few games in this competition.

if this carries on and we somehow fluke our way into the semis, We’ll have to suffer Southgate and co being treated like deities with the media misusing the word hero as usual. Bloody excruciating.

Bah humbug.

Excellent that we have progressed, even before the game. Bizarre how 1 goal saw us get out of the group, but thats the set up. Decent 1st half but by eck do this team bore me. As (i think Col said) we have some great young talent, which i feel are restrained at times, not so much by our manager but by our expectations. Ive seen some players ive never heard of look 10 times better than some of ours. Thats international football for you. A starting 11 for most teams will have some players at big clubs.

If only we were all blessed with your superior football knowledge, Col.

We just have to plod on thinking how very ordinary England have been so far and what a stunningly negative Manager Southgate is.

Hopefully we'll improve.

Thought England were much better tonight and were good to watch apart from 20 minutes or so after half time. Saka, Grealish, Sterling, Sancho, Bellingham, Rashford, Henderson, Philips and Pickford all looking good, with some very talented youngsters in there, and the 4/5 at the back have done what they needed to. Kane was better today than the last 2 games, but was surprised he stayed on the full game when looking so knackered much of the 2nd half.

What do you call a Scotsman in the knockout stages of a football tournament?

The Referee!

I'd like to see this England line-up for the knockout stages ...

I was at the match a couple of years ago when we beat the Czechs 5-0, we had a swagger and confidence that was a joy to watch, where has that gone? You can only blame the manager as the players are more than good enough but are being stifled by over-cautiousness. The test will really come when we go behind in a game against quality opponents, I hope we're up to it...

Did you see Sweden v Slovakia ...
I was " locked " in a small room with that match.
That was a boring match

Do you remember the start of last season. QPR leaky defence... constantly sure we were going to concede, always worried one goal wa not enough..

Warburton tightened the defence, stopped conceding, started scoring a goal to win a match.
Began to be pretty confident...

That is what Southall is doing. That is why he is playing Rice and Phillips

If the defence holds up in the next match..and we get through...we will go all the way
