I wouldn’t worry about what the Scottish fans think Jeff……..’he who casts the first stone’ and all that
When the government condones the booing of players taking the knee, it's hard to see how things are going to improve.
The big question last night is why did senior player Sterling not take a penalty and instead leave it to a rookie.
Southgate has said who took the penalties was all down to him. He chose them based on what they did in training.
Spot on Devon. Saka looked liked a scared rabbit walking up to the spot. That was down to Southgate and now those players have a psychological scar which they didn't have before. Our pens were shockers. As I said yesterday you don't save 2 out of 5 and lose. That stupid run up and stop should be banned. Just kick the bloody ball as hard as you can, like Shearer. Once again penalties has been the wrecking of a tournament and it simply comes down to mentality. You really shouldnt miss from 12 yards... Especially not three times.
Its a cruel way for any team to lose, it sort of takes the shine off it, going to penalties in the first place, nevermind extra time. Its a fine line between a good and a poor penalty. Rashfords was poor whilst the others could be classed as good saves. If the keeper goes the other way then they are described as good penalties.
Grealish has tweeted saying he stuck his hand up to take one. It was the manager's choice. We certainly shouldn't be blaming any individual player for missing (5 did across both teams) or not taking a pen (they didn't choose the orde).
Its a good penalty if it goes in thats the fine line. Look at jorghinos in the semi, looks great cos the keeper went the wrong way yet in reality it was a pea roller.
My last post for today as I'm going to try and bury my head in work and forget about it all - Pickford had a decent game and did really well with the pens. I still lack confidence in him though and wish we had a better 'keeper. Probably odd to say after he got the golden gloves, only let in two all tournament, and saved 2/5 pens. BUT part of why we are set up so defensively, imo, is to limit how many shots he has to face. I think we could afford to be less risk averse if we had a stronger GK. I really hope Henderson at Utd might become that GK in the next 18 months, but who knows.
It’s so easy for us to say how a penalty should be taken….we are all experts when sitting on our sofas
I wonder if he took into account the “mental” aspect and training for penalties? I think it may be an area to improve for the future.
I think everybody is reading too much into this penalty stuff. You could spend all day, everyday, taking penalties (obviously not in front of 70,000 people). If the keeper chooses the correct way then he most likely saves it. We missed one penalty, their keeper saved the other 2. We need to concentrate on winning within 90 minutes of football over taking ****ing penalties.
I did hear Southgate say that he choose on what happened in training and if so that is ludicrous. All 11 players on the pitch must be prepared to take a penalty so it is down to the senior players to step up and put their hands up to take the first 5 and then the manager decides the order, the strongest going first. It was completely unfair on Saka, he should have been 9th or 10th taker.
Im sure you are good at your job Ellers, likewise I like to think I’m good at mine….however the fact remains we all **** up sometimes….and hopefully learn from it.
Agree but like in all our jobs you would always ask why? No one would do my job unless they were 100% ready and have the experience. It would be the same in yours. I just feel we ‘#### up’ too much when it comes to penalties and tournaments.
