England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Rice, Phillips, Sterling, Mount, Kane. Team quoted by BBC. Can't guarantee it is genuine though
Meh. After first 20 minutes this has been turgid. If we win it's no indication of dominance at this point.
So Southgate picks two penalty takers who have only been on the park 2min. Poor decision imo Best team won
Italy lost their way in the first half then England did the same in the second half. Neither side did enough to win - thus the penalties.
Sorry Rick, but can't agree with that. Italy outplayed us for 80% of the game. Poor team selection and poor use of subs. Not posative enough after we had taken the lead, sat back too much. Poor game management
Promising signs that England are learning how to play tournament football and finally, really competing. We've got some real talent (in depth) and young enough to see us through a few more tournaments. It's no disgrace losing to Italy in a final but the nag is it was kind of there for the taking. It may still happen in my lifetime
Well, I'd say about 70% really including injury time but Italy took a long time to get going after that early goal blew a hole in their tactical plan. Mancini adjusted that and they found their rhythm in the second half and were the better team from then on. Agree with England not being positive enough and I don't understand bringing Saka on with the other quality players on the bench. Grealish was also disappointing when he came on and England never really got a rhythm going again. It's a young team though and they should do well in the next world cup.
England controlled the first half -- a good illustration of how a team (in this case Italy) can dominate possession without having control. As Rick says, Mancini reacted at half time whereas England didn't (Southgate's initial substitutions -- Henderson for Rice, Saka for Trippier -- signalled "more of the same" rather than any shift towards wresting back the initiative). Italy's extra day for recovery also started to tell; England began to look like Denmark in the semi-final, increasingly drained as the game wore on. I agree with Hairy; looking forward, the positives far outweigh any negatives. And Sancho and Saka for their gutsy willingness to put their heads on the penalty block.
