Hardly surprising they're trying to defend the motives of one of their own.....

Who said it would be sound? But the rest of the world seems to be doing okay outside the EU, and people within the EU are voicing concerns. A Euro collapse would depend on the cause, but it would hardly make it better, and the institution and currency is creaking and groaning according to some.

You continue to confuse the EU with the single market and why it's economically essential that we retain our access to it, if we wish to remain as a growing economy. The rest of the World doing Ok as you put it, ignores the simple fact that barring Russia every European country either has access to the single market or is trying to attain it. Why is that? Is the entirety of Europe barking? Or could it be that it has significant economic benefits?

For every few ****s like him there'd be an innocent man put to death.

    See the US for details

It's not something that we should be seeking to bring back imo

It's not zero though, as the state releases killers to reoffend for one.

Figures for 2014 show the reoffending rate overall to be around the 40% mark, with around 300 of those being deemed as 'serious further offences'.

Perhaps, but it STILL doesn't alter what I put about there being other options. You keep banging about something that's not really being argued.

That tells us nothing about killers reoffending or murderers committing more murders though, does it?

I wouldn't reserve it just for murderers, so serious further offences will do me.

What offences would you use capital punishment for?

You've not stated what those options are though.

What I'm saying is that there AREN'T any options that won't result in a massive amount of economic pain that will take a decade plus for us to haul ourselves out of.

I think that tougher sentencing and completion of the full sentence imposed, would be more of a deterrent than bringing back the death sentence.

The ones that fall under the above SFO banner for a kick off. It's certainly something that judges should have as an option for rapists and serial killers. Not to say they all swing, but it should be an option.

EDIT from the link above. It doesn't say how many people each murderer went on to kill or rapist rape etc or how many were not convicted due to a lack of evidence.

I don't think there'd be 300 miscarriages of justice a year for similar crimes.

Table 1: SFO notifications received under the NOMS SFO Review Process which resulted in a conviction for England and Wales.

    2014/15

    Murder 42
    Attempted Murder 14
    Manslaughter 11
    Rape /assault by penetration 90
Arson with Intent to endanger life 9
    Kidnapping /Abduction/False imprisonment 21
    Attempted Kidnapping/Abduction 0
Other serious sexual or violent offences 65
    All SFO convictions 252
Offences which did not meet the SFO criteria 82
    All Convictions 334

    1. Any other serious violent or sexual offence which carries a maximum custodial penalty of more than 10 years.
    2. Offenders who had been charged with an offence which met the SFO criteria, but were convicted of a less serious offence.
    3. Provisional figures subject to change as outstanding cases are completed. 4. Users should note that SFO figures have been revised upwards following further action to pursue outstanding cases with probation providers. This work has now become part of regular reporting and therefore we expect to see smaller differences going forward.

Strictly speaking, the full sentence is always carried out, it's just not carried out in prison.

For the sort of crimes in question, it's unlikely either will make much impression on the figures for detterents. Some are a consequence of impulsive actions, others are insane.
