Too many of our 'poor people' are poor by choice and encouraged to remain poor by virtue of living in a badly run nanny state.

<laugh> I don't think your paltry contribution to the exchequer is likely to make much difference to the nation's finances somehow.

But if you ever get sick I trust you will turn down all offers of help from the NHS.

You've no idea what my contributions are, but assumptions are all you've got, so carry on <cheers>

As long as the govt continue fleecing me, I will indeed use the service (in an emergency) if it's convenient.

NI is just a general tax. It doesn't pay for anything specifically.

The majority of those on low incomes are hard working people, who aren't poor by choice at all.

I do appreciate that. Any changes will have to be implemented over a long period of time and I am not even sure as to what shape the changes will take.

Maybe we could be allowed to opt out of the system if we so choose and as long as we can demonstrate our ability to self fund our medical needs?

The NHS would fold if those who could afford to opt out had the option of having their tax burden reduced

You can use the same argument over education and welfare, the bottom line is that those who earn more, subsidise those at the low end of the earnings spectrum

You're wrong there Fatguts. National Insurance is exactly that; it is intended to insure you against ill health and any circumstances that prevent you from being able to work - including old age.

Appreciated. My biggest gripe is that those that take our taxes aren't stringent enough on ensuring only those in genuine need get looked after. If they did crack down, then there would be more funds for those in legitimate need and less ill feeling from people like me that feel like we are a milk cow.

If the system was as equally stringent on those at the top end of the pay scale who avoid paying their fair share, as it is on those living in poverty, then the 'middle' wouldn't have to be squeezed as hard as it has been for decades.

The benefits culture stems from Thatchers Britain. She created the vast pockets of long term unemployed and we're now living with the 2nd and 3rd generation career dossers. They need tackling and the Tories are doing - but whilst not concentrating even half of the resource that could reap much higher returns at the other end of the scale.

It always amuses me that welfare recipients are viewed as scroungers thieving off the state, whilst tax dodgers are treated with far less cynicism and even a degree of acceptance.

Absolutely spot on Tobes, as has been said many times on here, the top 1% and large corporations are getting away with paying **** all.

Long term unemployment isn't as big a factor today as it was 20 years ago.

Personally I think all this misses the point that it is the cost of helping poor people that is the key.

£600m written off as wasted on the Universal Credit system , £25bn goes to private landlords, £6bn on the pension triple lock that pays more money to pensioners who are already well off.

All these things come out of my taxes and do not benefit the poor.

I agree they didn't do enough to tackle the issue at a time when realistically we could have had full employment - as in 2004 the poles started arriving and we've had over 2.3m immigrants arrive who are working and paying their way since that time. So why have we still got over 2m sat on their hoops?
