Whether you like The City or not it's vital to the UK economy. Without it the UK would sink economically.

It provides some 8% GVA to the total economy. And some 3.5% of total employment. It help massively to contribute to the only trade surplus the UK has, which is in services.

It also attracts capital to the U.K. and is responsible for a large proportion of Gvt tax revenues.

Yes, it goes wrong, sometimes spectacularly - as in 2008. I'm not going to go into great detail here about what exactly went wrong, but suffice to say that you cannot police or regulate what you don't even understand. Plus the FSA are an overblown waste of time.

It's easy to hate The City and London, and the people who work there. But those people pay millions upon millions in taxes. And London itself contributes some 30% of all UK tax revenues. A lot of that comes from The City and the people who work there.
