As suspected when the initial story broke, what has she actually promised them?

The worry will be that these "assurances", in Mr Ghosn's words, amounted to a gigantic financial lob that Mrs May had to give his company to persuade it to stay.

With four in every five cars produced at Nissan destined for the export market, mainly the rest of the EU, the company was looking at export tariffs of 10% once Britain leaves the EU. The chances are that Mrs May has promised to protect Nissan from that.

The danger with this approach is that if Mrs May has promised financial support to Nissan to mitigate the impact of any tariffs post-Brexit, that may amount to an illegal subsidy even under the rules of the World Trade Organisation (don't forget, Britain would no longer be subject to EU rules on state aid).

So that would mean that Mrs May would have to offer similar 'assurances' to every other foreign-owned carmaker operating in the UK and, who knows, perhaps every other exporter who faces tariffs on their products once Britain has left the EU.

The alternative is that Mrs May has given Mr Ghosn assurances that Britain will remain in the EU's single market or customs union once it has left the EU.

It is hard to see how she could have promised the former as the PM has insisted she is prepared to sacrifice membership of the single market if that is the price that has to be paid for regaining control of Britain's borders. So, has she promised him Britain will retain a customs union agreement?

Interesting interview with head of Nissan.
No special deal for Nissan and no additional guarantees that other UK car manufacturers can't access.
Difficult to read, impression given is that entire car industry have been given assurances that government will cover an element of costs that Brexit might incur.
The reality of all this is the car industry are already quids in due to reduced wage costs providing country of origin rules can be sorted.

No Bregrets: Voters still believe Brexit is BEST for Britain and country will be RICHER

In a YouGov survey, 45 per cent are convinced leaving the EU is best for Britain compared to 44 per cent who disagree.

There is also optimism about Britain’s economic performance away from the Brussels-based bloc, with 42 per cent believing the UK will be richer in the long-term than it would have been remaining inside the EU.

Only 28 per cent said the British economy would fare worse over the next 10 to 20 years after Brexit than it would remaining tied to Brussels.

Earlier today, official figures showed the economy had continued to grow since the historic Brexit vote on June 23, in defiance of pre-referendum scaremongering.

Major car manufacturer Nissan also committed to building two of its new models at its Sunderland plant, which could create hundreds of new jobs over the coming years.

The YouGov poll revealed even some of the gloomiest forecasts for the future of the UK would not deter support for Brexit.

Among those who believe quitting the EU is still right for Britain, only seven per cent said they would change their mind if Brexit resulted in a significant increase in unemployment.

Only three per cent would ditch their backing for Brexit if Scotland left the UK, the price of a weekly grocery shop went up by 10 per cent, or the EU imposed tariffs on British exports.

If much of London’s financial services industry were to move to the rest of Europe in the wake of Brexit only four per cent would change their opinion, while only one per cent would oppose leaving the EU if British holidaymakers were forced to get visas before travelling to the Continent.

But exactly half of the total 1,608 respondents - both Leave and Remain supporters - accepted the British economy would be worse off in the short-run due to Brexit.

Only 17 per cent said the British economy would get better over the next five years or so outside of the EU than it would inside the bloc.

Theresa May has signalled Britain will formally quit the EU with exit negotiations due to be completed in Spring 2019, although these could be extended if no agreement is reached.
