A grammar school system would end up with the wealthy being able to pay thousands for tutors in the run up to the 11+, in order to save themselves a fortune on private school fees later....

 

We are about the 50th in the world for population density. IF we had 80m people we'd be about 40th.

 

It doesn't have to. Problem isn't the idea of grammar schools, but the way they are set up.

In my day, things were probably worse. Your future depended to a large extent on how you did at an examination that you took, in my case, at age 10.

You then went to either a Grammar school, where you were most definitely given a higher level of education from teachers who were often Oxbridge graduates. You were being moulded for the 'professions' medicine, accountancy, banking. Etc.

If you failed, you were sent to a Secondary modern school. There you received a lower standard of education - it was assumed that you would be no more than a tradesman, certainly not a professional! You were taught to CSE standard, not GCE, as we were at Grammar school.

The point is that your future was being decided for you by a system that had, in many cases, condemned you and written you off in childhood.

I had the benefit of the same thing, and it was never right. As you say, kids futures were effectively being decided at 11.

A phobia is an irrational fear, my fear of Islam is very much rational. Yes, it's still immensely stupid to cover such a number of people with such a sweeping statement. Disliking terrorists who happen to be Muslims or disliking some extreme parts of orthodox Islam is one thing. Disliking everyone who happens to have been born into a religion is just as stupid as disliking anyone who was born black or a woman or a Chelsea fan.

What does happen when you leave Islam? Surely it varies a lot depending on where you are. Secular and non-Orthodox Muslims live happily all over the world like every other religion.

England - ~80% as of 2011 (87% in 2001)
Scotland - ~84% as of 2011 (88% in 2001)
Wales - ~93% as of 2011 (96% in 2001)
Northern Ireland - ~98% as of 2011 (99% in 2001)
