Probably needless to say, but I couldn't give him credit for anything. To me, this is more a case of Michael Gove imposing a ban after being finally convinced that pesticides really are a danger to spineless creatures.

Self-preservation methinks...

I don't need to respond to this. Whilst I may loath the car industry and what it has done to our cities I would not justify targeting individual car owners - which could include most of those on here. I would certainly target the car industry by whatever legal means I have at my disposal, but that is a different thing. This does not appear to be motivated by any kind of environmentalist concerns (a burning car causes just as much pollution as a running one) - just a wanton lust for destruction and violence, presumably inspired by alcohol. It is, however, true that I regard the senseless beating up of the police as the more serious offence.
 
The Express is in full flight with this story, but what can one expect. The report in my French newspaper tells me that the THUGS were aged between 11 and 13 in this region. Over the two largest towns Poitiers and Chatellerault there were 12 cars involved. This is not a revolt against anything, just a senseless tradition that has built up over the years in the towns and cities. Arson and violence in any form should not be tolerated, but I could point you to cars being deliberately set on fire in England twenty years ago. Having searched the national news there is no report of huge revolt against anything, just a police officer who got a broken nose as he tried to arrest a teenager in Paris. The main items being how well the President is doing and his poll rating is back above 60% approval, far better than any politician in England, and how a wind turbine fell down in the wind.

Aha, I should have waited before replying......just the Express up to their normal standard of reportage and SH. using it for an attack on France. I might have known <laugh>

It seems this tradition has been going on for over 10 years and is not limited to NYE apparently Bastille Day is also a peak in incidents of car burning.

Just to keep it in perspective 100,000 cars go up in flames in Britain every year - which equates to 300 per day. Not saying that these are deliberate just bringing in a bit of perspective.

I'm sure just as many accidental burnings also happen in other EU countries, it just seems hooligans in France have a particular penchant for setting them alight on purpose.
