Off Topic The Environment

I think that both you and I are lucky cologne in that we have land to be able to try and produce our own food, but of course many do not. In the same way I can go and gather fruits and mushrooms from the surrounding countryside. Not so easy if you live in the middle of Watford. It worries me when I read a report that says a farmer in the UK was offering a food bank sacks of surplus potatoes, and the offer was refused on the grounds that people would not know how to cook them. My neighbours used to grow a lot of their own vegetables, but gave up as they became older, and found that frozen bags of them could be bought cheaply. On my visit to England a week ago I was struck by the amount of packaged food in the supermarkets, far more than you would find here. Somewhere along the line people have forgotten the art of cooking fresh foods. There must be huge factories somewhere putting meat or vegetables into plastic film. Is it necessary I wonder?
I agree that self sufficiency is a luxury for many people Frenchie, and also that many consumers are not remotely interested in where their products come from, or how they are produced - normally they only look at the price. Unfortunately the system sees us only as consumers and as workers - who work to pay for that consumption. We are taught to believe that what we have is always 'not enough' and to strive for more. Sometimes I ask where family life has gone in Britain - when do families actually all eat together ? Looking at the opening times in supermarkets in Britain and then comparing them to those in Germany or France - then you think that the British weekend has become somehow lost in comparison. Buying local is still possible though (harder in Birmingham I admit) and helps to regenerate the 'communities' which have become a thing of the past in many areas of Britain.

Just finished Sacred Balance BB... a compelling and easy read filled with facts, and just a sprinkling of magic, about our earth. I highly recommend it. Shows the interrelationship of all living things and how homo sapiens has completely mucked up the ecosystem .

Glad to hear it - I did think you would appreciate it.

Have you read Rachel Carson's Silent Spring? An oldie - 1962 - but another brilliant tome on man's effect on the environment. I first read it in the early 80s - whilst reading it I was also listening to an album by Colin Wilkie (a German based, English born folk singer) and one of the tracks was called Silent Spring, obviously inspired by the book. Together they had such a profound and lasting effect on me.

"Lawyers are preparing to mount an unprecedented class action against the government over its repeated failures to clean up illegal levels of air pollution from diesel traffic.

The legal challenge on behalf of asthma sufferers could see ministers paying out significant compensation for allowing the nation’s air to exceed legal limits for so long.

News of the action comes as the government prepares to publish a new draft air quality plan, after judges found previous efforts to tackle air pollution were so poor as to be illegal."

Time for the government to change their legal team as they lose every case that gets before the courts.

Is this a foretaste of how the Government wishes to behave after it loses the checks and balances of the EU?

I think it's more in line with the attitudes they have shown since coming to power in 2010. Not being flippant, but their policies are directly responsible for tens of thousands of deaths, over which they haven't batted a proverbial eyelash. This wouldn't worry them in the slightest.

Must say I agree.... and why on earth would a PM do this.... she is just 'placing' a potential leadership challenger without consideration at all of the fit..... all that is wrong about politics
They are simply looking at what is going on across the pond to orange45 and his select band of science denying, women hating, pro-hunting, christian fascist fruit loons and trying to get away with it here. You have to wonder if the people actually realise what is going on? We're going toe to toe with 'Murica in the world heavyweight laughing stock championship. It's unacceptable.
