I don't even bother checking The Gaming Thread much now... normally full of Tash and everyone he's played on Xbox Live arguing with each other... I'll leave them to it.

I wonder if they put forward player drafts and wage caps in their effort to Americanise the league. Imagine someone like wigan being able to sign an 18 year old rooney just for finishing at the bottom of the league.

I remember saying not so long back on here that they should increase relegation/promotion places to four or five. Imagine how exciting that would be!?

It was as recently as 1987 before teams from 'Conference' level could gain automatic promotion to the football league - before that I think that a panel would deliberate over whether a club needed demoting/promoting from the different levels.

I can't remember the exact dates but it took a good few years after 1987 before we saw the system in place that we do today.

Never under-estimate the power of money. I can see massive changes in football over the next few years - including a European SuperLeague which will pretty much include teams who have their own TV rights.

Top 3 from Championship automatically promoted
Top 2 from League One automatically promoted
Winner of League Two automatically promoted

4th-11th in Championship + 3rd-7th in League One + 2nd-4th in League Two enter knockout competition of 16, last 4 also gain promotion.

So based on current positions, next season could be.

    Relegated
    QPR
    West Brom
    Swansea
    Fulham
    Everton
    Wolves
    Sunderland
    Bolton
    Wigan
    Blackburn

    Promoted
    Southampton
    West Ham
    Middlesbrough
    Charlton
    Huddersfield
    Crawley
4 from [Derby, Brighton, Hull, Leeds, Crystal Palace, Cardiff, Ipswich, Peterborough, Sheff Wed, Notts County, MK Dons, Preston, Sheff Utd, Southend, Oxford, Cheltenham]

Then balance the leagues out from there, meaning fluxuating relegation spots in the lower leagues.

Now that we're a bonafide top ten team that'd be a great idea! <whistle>

Honestly though, that would make it much more exciting and competitive!

i'm sure there was a case not long ago about a team who's facilities/finances didn't come up to scratch (not sure if it was conference team or the league below)

The only thing the Americans have got right, the draft! I don't know if they have promotion/relegation but it really wouldn't matter as any promoted team could just get first pick. I wouldn't have changed our system for any other a while back but the money has just got out of control. Probably too complicated all round for us the draft now but I really like the idea in terms of making the league competitive. Really levels the playing field. We desperately need some wage caps. One of the biggest villains in terms of widening the gap between top and bottom.

I think that it's a terrible knee-jerk reaction to last season where there was only 10 points separating 9th and 18th compared to the usual 20pts. This means that even established PL teams aren't safe anymore from the drop and the owners are starting to realise this. But they can't deny that the gap between the PL teams and the lower leagues is widening. Just by looking at the last 5 seasons, 2/3's of the promoted teams didn't last more than 2 seasons( only the mackems, Stoke and Wolves did with the jury still out on us and WBA).

Didn't Ashington get booted out the league for simply being too far away from everyone? It used to go down to a vote from all the teams so naturally they used to pick the one that was hardest to get to.

Also with regards to player drafts and other things the Yanks do, am I right in thinking the players have to go to college first?

The difference between UK Footy and the NFL is that the sole aim of NFL is to make money for everyone in the NFL. Which is why the crappest teams get the pick of the best new players every year in the draft so that in theory the clubs all get a share of success.

For me one of the worst aspects of North American sport is that the NFL and owners operate the league as an 'old-boys' network and jointly protect their financial interests by closing the doors to an 'upstarts'. It's an attractive proposition for the owners as it protects their investments.

If a club does really badly (i.e. doesn't make enough money for the owners) the most usual course of action is to auction off the franchise to the highest bidding city and the cities are falling over themselves to grap a franchise.

Here in the UK the club is strongly identified with the town... not so much in the US. Which is why it will always be 'The Raiders' but sometimes it was Oakland, and sometimes it was Los Angeles.

I was at a game a few weeks back where Oakland Raiders were at the Buffalo Bills and in my section there were both passionate Bills and Raiders fans who were from all over the place - I didn't meet one Raiders fan from California that day although I did talk to a Bills fan who had flown in from Florida) and they probably had 15-20k+ Bills fans in the ground, (stadium holds around 75k I think)

If it ever happened (and I don't thjink it will in a hundred years) we would end up with clubs being followed by plastic fans and the soul of our game would die.

    -

Also I have to say well done to you lot this season; surprised me how well Pardew has your team playing as a team and by fighting back for a draw against Spurs you've effectivly killed the accusation that you had only played lesser teams so far. Don't see you keeping a top 6 place but I reckon 8 is a real possibility for you this year.

I think the transfer window and the ACoN could be the making or breaking of our season, said 9th at the start and would be happy with that.
Where do you think you'll finish

Yeah it was a messed up system, less to do with merit more to do with practicality.

Willow Pond, I imagine if we introduced that system we'd have about 10 clubs with 50k+ attendances. London United, London City, London Athletic, London Wanderers, London Forest, London Rovers, London Rangers, London Albion, London Hotspurs and London FC. The rest of England AKA 'the north' would then be made up of regional leagues with real fans.
