Have no time for them but understand their grievances. Met a few lads from Norwich that were in the EDL and they were all stand up lads. All of them well educated and in good jobs. Think a lot of them are simply against the militant Muslims and not every other colour than White.

They also hated the BNP and the National front.

You said "anyone defending their rights to "free speech" is equally as much a fandan as this pile of slavering ****s." With you surely not declaring yourself to being a slavering **** fandan, that leads me to the only logical conclusion which is that you believe these people shouldn't be granted free speech. The only way to enforce that would be by repressing their ability to speak freely. But please do point out how my reasoning is wrong, unless I've made a false assumption and you are in fact professing to be a slavering ****. <ok>

It was a question from me anyway, not a statement. Why you didn't give a proper answer is beyond me, it was a pretty simple yes/no affair; no need to be so defensive and uppity, my man.

Everyone has the 'right to free speech', but having 'free speech' is not equivalent to the right to say absolutely anything you want without fear of consequences (legal or otherwise). It's pretty simple really.

The EDL are entitled to hold their pig-ignorant views. But it's not particularly clear to me that the way in which they express these views is simple 'freedom of speech'. It could be argued quite easily that they are guilty of hate-crime/racism/bigotry/whateverthehellyoucallit - these aren't and never should be covered by 'freedom of speech'

I agree that they have the right to protest, but it doesn't do much good.

Cut out the middle man, and give these Muslim extremists a good ****ing slap <ok>

That's entirely what free speech is, and the fear of legal consequences is why it doesn't exist today.

The right to say what you want has to be balanced by the effect of what you say. The rights of others to live free of intimidation, hatred and threats, even if only verbal, is just as much a human right as the right to free speech. When the two come into conflict and where you draw the line is the tricky part. Regardless, sometimes the absolute right to say what you want is of lesser importance.

I'm talking in an entirely general sense here, btw, not particularly about the EDL.

I don't know about the SDL but the EDL are a loose affiliate of right wing nazi sympathisers, football hooligans and ignorant fools.

They target Muslim groups in particular as the root of the problem when in fact most of the problems in this country stem from an apathetic indigenous population and a political system which is dominated by two parties, both of whom now put the needs of the rich above the requirements of the poor. Sadly, politicians, especially those in power, while not encouraging groups such as the EDL don't go out of their way to curb their behaviour.

Why? Because they distract people from the real problems that blight this country.

Unfortunately, while ignorant people follow the banner of the EDL and vote for parties such as the BNP nothing will really change.
