BBC MAN DALY AND CHANNEL FOUR'S THOMSON IN CAHOOTS AGAINST RANGERS- Exclusive

IT’S the most famous cry in Britain. One that has echoed for more years than I care to remember. The cry is….

MIND THE GAP!

It is heard every time the doors of a Tube open in a London Underground Station.

But there is another gap. And it is the one no journalist wants to fall into. It’s called the…

CREDIBILITY GAP!

And Channel Four’s Alexander James Thomson, known as Alex, is now in grave danger of falling through that credibility gap, where he will find BBC Scotland’s Mark Daly.

Thomson should beware of listening too closely to Daly, a man with an ego and chip on his shoulder, both almost as big as his anti Rangers agenda.

Channel Four’s Thomson and his camera crew gatecrashed a BBC Radio Five Live debate about the state Rangers are in as the club reels from the WHYTE SCANDAL.

Daly and Thomson looked like best buddies as the pair went into private conclave after the end of the programme.

In the main, the programme, in the hands of the Beeb professionals from London, was fair and balanced, with a decent contribution from their man in Scotland, Roddy Forsyth, who doubles as the Daily Telegraph, the biggest selling quality newspaper in the country, man on this side of Hadrian’s Wall.

As a matter of interest, does Mark Daly read the Daily Telegraph? He should! For on the day Craig Whyte bought Rangers, Forsyths’s sidekick, Ewing Grahame, exposed Whyte’s previous dodgy deals and the fact he had served a seven year ban, preventing him from being a director.

Come to think of it, does Scottish Football Association chief executive, Stewart Regan read the Daily Telegraph? Probably not! He looks and sounds more like a Guardian reader, to me. A Guardian reader, of course meaning more than merely someone who reads the Guardian.

But back to Daly and the otherwise well conducted by the BBC men from London’s Five Live show from Govan. The only moment when we got a flavour of what we have come to expect from those who both inhabit and infect BBC Scotland, came near the end, predictably from Mark Daly.

He fired what sounded more of an accusation than a question at Gordon Smith about what his knowledge was of how Craig Whyte was mismanaging Rangers.

It was a deliberate and desperate attempt by Daly to accuse a man he already knew was innocent. What Daly did tells us a great deal about how the man works.

We already know he has passed off the story about Whyte's director ban as his own, depsite the fact it appeared in the Daily Telegraph before the tardy Daly used it on BBC Scotland.

What Gordon Smith told me about another aspect of the way Daly goes about his business is chilling and once again highlights the lengths to which some folk at BBC Scotland, among them Mark Daly, seem to be prepared to go to blacken the name of anyone with a Rangers connection.

Daly, Smith told me, spoke to him before the programme and asked about what he may have known about what Whyte was up to by not paying PAYE and VAT.

Even in private it was a stupid question. Smith’s title was director of football, but he did not have a seat on the board. He was not a Rangers’ director.

Gordon Smith did not even work from an office inside Ibrox. He was based, like manager Alastair McCoist, at the training ground in Milngavie. Does Daly think McCoist might have known what Whyte was up to too?

Either Daly is a very stupid man, not to know Smith's role was purely a football one, or he chose to misunderstand, for I cannot think of any other reason. Can you?

And, not for a moment do I believe Mark Daly is a very stupid man. Do you?

Yet, despite having this carefully explained to him by Smith, Daly still chose to launch his accusatory question at Smith, live on national radio. BBC bosses – you know, the real ones – in London may be interested to note this. I’m well aware of LeggoLands’s following in the Beeb corridors of power in London.

Afterwards, when confronted by Smith, Daly used weasel words to claim he only asked the question in order that Smith be given the opportunity to clear his name.

AYE, RIGHT!

Before Daly's sly move, Smith had stood accused of nothing and had no need to clear his name until, from out of left field, Mark Daly, to all intents and purposes, appeared to try and blacken his name.

Now Smith is being attacked in at least one newspaper - Daly's pal, Tom English in the Scotsman since you ask - with cheap innuendo.

English is another who is not a stupid man. Indeed, he far from it. So, you may well be tempted to ask what his game is joining this BBC Scotland witch hunt of an entirely blameless individual?

But that is what those with any Rangers connection have come to expect from the hotbed of rabid anti-Rangers hatred harboured in BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay headquarters.

And that is where the CREDIBILITY GAP comes into play. The one which Channel Four’s Alexander James Thomson should beware of falling through by dint of association with Daly, not to mention IRA supporter Philmacgiollabhain and extremist Celtic supporter, Matt McGlone.

For such is the width and depth of the credibility gap that when Mark Daly – in October – finally caught up with the story about Craig Whyte’s seven year directorship ban, which had appeared in the Daily Telegraph in May, nobody believed him. Even though he was right.

So many, indeed, too many, anti Rangers stories had spewed from BBC Scotland in recent years and so many pro Celtic slanted tales from so many of its reporters – notably rabid Celtic fan Chris McLaughlin – had become a BBC Scotland staple, that nobody believed Mark Daly’s BBC Scotland belated expose of Craig Whyte.

Daly’s programme was second hand news, in much the same way as Channel Four’s highly decorated Alexander James Thomson hit town with a fanfare from Philmacgioolbhain and Matt McGlone about how he was going to blow the WHYTE SCANDAL and the EBTs tale wide open.

In fact his report on Channel Four’s flagship seven o’clock news programme on Tuesday night was not even a damp squib.

There was an interview with a frail looking and clearly ill Hugh Adam. Actually, it was distressing to see the ailing 86-year-old who I spent many a convivial evening with in the 1990s, appearing befuddled and unable to talk clearly. Indeed, I question the journalistic ethics of Thomson subjecting him to such a grilling on camera.

There is also talk in the media village and at a high level in football's power bases, of Adam actually admitting to one reporter that his memory had gone.

Accusations, from a frail, ill man with a memory problem, which have long been in the public domain, were re-hashed by Alexander James Thomson with all the freshness and appeal of a Saturday night drunk’s vomit stinking the pavement the following morning.

Who knows, maybe, just maybe, Alexander James Thomson of Channel Four News, took some advice from BBC Scotland’s Mark Daly when the pair had their wee private confab in Govan after BBC Five Live’s programme on Rangers on Monday night.

If he did, then, if he really is the smart operator many claim him to be, Alexander James Thomson of Channel Four may now think he has been duped.

Possibly, by Mark Daly of BBC Scotland.

And so we are back to the cry!

With BBC Scotland, the news organisation which has cried wolf so often with regard to Rangers that when they finally – seven months after the Daily Telegraph revealed it – got something right, nobody believed them.

Mind the gap!

BBC ATTACKED BY RANGERS ON TWO FRONTS

WHEN Rangers supporters gather in their hundreds outside Pacific Quay on Saturday, the luvvies and know alls inside the BBC Scotland HQ will no doubt sneeringly laugh off the protest with snooty disdain.

That’s the way they are.

They will not find it quite so funny when the scene switches to London and Craig Whyte puts BBC bosses in the dock at the Old Bailey.

If the gaping holes in the BBC Scotland programme, Rangers - The Inside Story, which was so unprofessional, are so obvious to these old journalistic eyes, then we can be sure forensic legal examination by libel specialists, Carter Ruck will reveal even more questions the Beeb will find it hard to answer.

No wonder Rangers owner Craig Whyte, and the club’s supporters have decided they have had enough of the blatantly biased Beeb.

For Whyte, that means banning them, plus a trip to the Bailey and an attempt to hurt BBC Scotland where it hurts, and also force it to conform to its obligation to report fairly.

For the fans it means exercising their right of free speech. Vanguard Bears have organised Saturday’s protest and will be joined by the Union Bears, the Blue Order and the Rangers Assembly.

It is understood Whyte is aware of the protest.

He and Carter Ruck, though, are more aware of the serious nature of some questions which BBC Scotland and the presenter of the controversial programme, Mark Daly, did not ask on it, but which they will have to answer, on oath, in the witness box at the Bailey.

For instance, when Daly interviewed Robert Burns, the Head of Investigations of the UK Insolvency Service , Burns solemnly declared that he had investigated Whyte, and that Whyte had broken the law. Whyte, according to Burns, had committed a criminal offence, punishable by the sentence of two years in prison.
Burns then did add that clearly there would have had to have been a criminal investigation, and a trial.

Now, as old hack, I waited for the next question from Daly. It never came. He did not ask Burns to explain why, if his investigation had uncovered a crime, no criminal investigation ,and no prosecution followed?

Did Burns pass the result of his investigation into Whyte to the Crown Prosecution Service, and if he did, why did they decline to prosecute?

Was the Director of Public Prosecutions involved? And if not, why not?
There are three courses of action available to the Crown Prosecution Service when presented with evidence. They can decline to prosecute because the evidence is insufficient, or because they do not believe it is in the public interest, or they can prosecute and test the evidence in court, in front of a jury.

The law in Britain does not allow anyone to go on television and blacken a man’s name by saying he committed a crime for which he could have been jailed for two years, without a prosecution having taken place, the evidence tested and the accused found guilty by twelve – fifteen in Scotland – of their peers.

But Robert Burns the Head of Investigations of the UK Insolvency Service, appeared to say just that. Even with his caveat. And in an appalling journalistic lapse, BBC Scotland’s Mark Daly did not challenge the statement. I have called it a journalistic lapse, for any other explanation is too horrible for this old hack to consider.

That is just one example of why BBC Scotland is heading for the dock at the Old Bailey. And why anything up to a thousand bluenoses on their way to Ibrox on Saturday, will stop off at Pacific Quay to stage their protest..

Leggo was lauding Craig Whyte before, during and after he took over Rangers yet he cites Ewing Grahame: "For on the day Craig Whyte bought Rangers...exposed Whyte’s previous dodgy deals and the fact he had served a seven year ban, preventing him from being a director."

So that means Leggo knew that Whyte was dodgy but still continued to back him for months after he took over the club!

CELTIC LAWYERS CHOSEN BY SPL TO PROBE RANGERS - Exclusive

THE Scottish Premier League have called in CELTIC’S lawyers to investigate RANGERS! (are we their only clients? like the Mafia?)

That’s the sort of intro I would expect to see in a newspaper a week on Sunday.... that is on April 1st. Or perhaps not. After all, spoof stories in newspapers on April Fool’s Day are hoaxes which are meant to deceive you, to take you in.

But who would believe a story which was quite so preposterous, quite so ludicrous, and quite such an affront to any sort of natural justice? (erm, you?)

Only a fool! (told you!)

Or the bigger fools at the Scottish Premier League who have actually come up with this appalling and iniquitous decision to hire the legal firm, Harper Macleod, who are Celtic’s lawyers, to investigate claims that Rangers ran a dual contracts scam.

You don’t believe me? I can’t say I blame you. No sane person would. But this is not sanity we are talking about. (no, it's deep rooted paranoia)

This is the Scottish Premier League who, along with their mates along the corridor on Hampden’s sixth floor, the SFA, inhabit a sort of cross between Alice’s Wonderland and the wonderful world of Oz, inhabited by Mad Hatters and Tin Men.

Neil Doncaster? Stewart Regan?

But, just in case you are still harbouring any doubts and think this old fool has got his dates confused and that this blog was meant to appear on April 1st, here is the confirmation, courtesy of a glowing testament to Harper Macleod from no less an authority than SFA chief executive Stewart Regan’s Hampden boardroom best buddy, Peter Lawwell who employs them to work for Celtic.

And there’s more. Not from Lawwell, but from someone else whose name is well known to regular readers. A man who, when Lloyds Bank was turning the screw on Rangers, was boasting to the BBC that he was in charge of all of Lloyds business banking in Scotland, one Manus Joseph Fullerton, a self confessed Celtic fanatic and founding director of the Celtic Trust. He produced this glowing tribute to the legal firm employed by the SPL to probe Rangers.

Their approach to managing Client relationships focuses on understanding the business need and developing interesting and innovative solutions. Harper Macleod really understands what they bring to a client relationship and it is clear that their success in recent years owes much to a clear implementation of a strategy built on strong personal and business relationship with the Bank."

So just who was it at the Scottish Premier League who thought it would be a good idea to employ Celtic’s solicitors to work for them investigating Rangers? (I shop at Tesco - does that mean they're mine?)

Well, one thing we do know is that Lawwell’s lapdog – though at Â£220,000-a-year he’s an expensive poodle – Celtic financial director, Eric Riley, sits on the SPL Board. Did he have a say? Did he propose Harper Macleod? (Dunno. Did he?)

And did another board member, Dundee United’s virulently anti-Rangers chairman, Stephen Thomson, just nod his head in agreement with his Parkhead pal? (Seems unlikely that a successful businessman and football club Chairman would be so docile but this is Leggo's fantasy after all)

We should not be surprised at the Celtic link though. One of the members of Regan and Lawwell’s SFA, appointed for their probe into the mismanagement of Rangers during the nine months conman Craig Whyte was creating havoc, is a man who sat in the same boardroom as Celtic director Ian Livingston.

Yes, you can rely on the Celtic cabal inside the SPL and the SFA to come up trumps when it comes to getting their own people in place to probe Rangers.. Or at least, that’s most certainly the way it may look to some, especially after this latest bombshell. (no, only paranoid nutters like you and the other monobrowed, keyboard thumpers who inhabit FF)

Of course, there is no suggestion that a reputable law firm such as Harper Macleod would act in any improper way. They will no doubt insist that “Chinese Walls” exist within the firm. (you've just spent the whole blog suggesting that very thing Leggo)

But Rangers and their supporters are entitled to feel sceptical about such assurances after getting the same promises from administrators Duff and Phelps regarding keeping their senior partner, David Grier, clear of Rangers, after he assisted Craig Whyte in the WHYTE SCANDAL, only for them to try to sneak Grier into David Murray’s Charlotte Square offices, only to be caught red handed by the Daily Record and Daily Telegraph.

CELTIC LAWYERS COULD CAUSE FIFA AND UEFA MELTDOWN - Exclusive

FOOTBALL bosses at FIFA and UEFA could be landed with their greatest ever crisis if Celtic’s lawyers decide the Scottish Premier League should strip Rangers of titles.

And the Scottish Football Association and their team, the national team, Scotland, would also be in the eye of a global storm

That is what the enormous responsibility Celtic director Eric Riley and his colleagues on the SPL board have handed to Celtic’s lawyers, Macleod and Harper.

According to a senior source I have spoken to with wide experience of Scottish football administration and contacts at the highest levels of the FIFA and UEFA hierarchies, all hell could break loose.

For if the Celtic lawyers, Macleod and Harper, decide there is information to support accusations that the EBTs some Rangers players had, constitute an extra contract, one which was not registered with the SFA, and if the SPL then decide to strip Rangers of titles won by the Ibrox club during that period, world football will be thrown into turmoil and engulfed in by an unprecedented crisis.

For that will meant that any player who had an EBT will be deemed to have been UNREGISTERED with the Scottish Football Association.

Making it unlawful, according to world governing body FIFA’s Laws, for any such player to have taken part in ANY match.

And that includes….

INTERNATIONALS!

So any country which lost out on a place in the finals of the European Championships or the World Cup Finals because of defeats against any Scotland side containing any such Rangers’ player, will have sound legal grounds for appeal.

The list of fixtures which will have to be poured over will date all the way back to the start of season 1998-99.

That includes the qualifying campaigns for the 2002, ‘06 and ’10 World Cup Finals, along with Euro 2000, ‘04 , ’08 and THIS summer’s tournament in Poland the Ukraine.

It will cause FIFA and UEFA a major headache and will be a nightmare for the Scottish Football Association.

UEFA may also have to deal with appeals from clubs who played against any Rangers team in the Champions League, UEFA Cup and Europa League which contained even a single player who Celtic’s lawyer’s Macleod and Harper, tell the SPL was not registered with the SFA.

And it does not end there either. For the Scottish Premier League would also be landed with a relegation, top six finish and Euro qualification legal tangle, dating back over a decade of campaigns, which could cost them MILLIONS and BANKRUPT Scottish football.

Clubs who were relegated on the back of bad results against Rangers, clubs who failed to make the top six on the back of bad results against Rangers and clubs who failed to make it into a European qualification spot because of bad results against Rangers, would all be in line to appeal against loss of income and even go to the Court of Session to try and make the SPL cough up.

And while all of this was going on Sky may just be tempted to wash their hands of the whole mess and walk away from the Â£50M new television deal which remains unsigned. (Scaremongering)

That is the can of worms opened by Celtic director Eric Riley and the Gang of Six, which includes Dundee United’s Stephen Thompson, Neil Doncaster and Ralph Topping, who sit on the SPL board and who called in Celtic’s solicitors, Macleod and Harper to probe Rangers.

It is called the law of unintended consequences!

Of course the man who brought in the EBTs, former Rangers owner, David Murray, vigorously denies the EBTs are in any way any sort of second contract and has legal advice to back his claim. (minty's a man to be trusted now, another flip flop by Leggo)

While Rangers supporters have sensibly called for the SPL to suspend their investigation until the Tax Tribunal, sitting on judgment on the EBTs, delivers it tax verdict.

Right now the Scottish Premier League board have backed themselves into a corner, possibly without properly examining the world wide ramifications of their knee jerk reaction.

No susprise there, then!

For we have already seen Stewart Regan and Peter Lawwell’s Scottish Football Association blunder in, by jumping the gun and announcing an SFA probe into the EBTs and any contract implications, before legal advice – lawyer Lunny? – forced chief executive Regan into an embarrassing U turn when he had it pointed out to him that the SPL had already announced they would be investigating and that any appeal which may come from the SPL verdict would have to be dealt with by the SFA.

It was a typical example of the sort of pre-emptive strike the Regan-Lawwell SFA seem keen to launch against Rangers.

But now the Scottish Football Association’s very own team , Scotland’s results, plus results in FIFA and UEFA tournaments from 1998, could be have to be re-assessed if Celtic’s lawyers, acting for the SPL, decide Rangers are guilty and strip them of titles.

LEGGOLAND DOES IT AGAIN!

THE SFA have stepped in to demand Neil Lennon explain himself after the Celtic manager branded referee Willie Collum a criminal.

But only after LeggoLand pointed out the extremely serious nature of Lennon's blackening of Religious Instruction teacher Collum's character.

Lennon seems to be oblivious - according to what he is quoted as saying in today's papers - as to what Rule he has broken.

So let me fill him in. It is SFA Rule 68 and it states quite clearly that "IT IS AN OFFENCE TO CRITICISE THE PERFORMANCE OF A MATCH OFFICIAL OR MAKE REMARKS WHICH IMPINGE ON HIS CHARACTER."

Of course maybe it is just me, but I'd have thought calling a man a criminal was a pretty clear cut case of being guilty of impinging his character in anybody's language. (Except Lennon did no such thing)

Let's see what lawyer Lunny comes up with...eventually.

However, it has taken SFA lawyer Lunny the best part of a week to get round to, according to Lennon, having a cosy wee chat with the Celtic manager about the "criminal" rant.

No fast track ban from lawyer Lunny for Lennon.

Here's a wee tip. Lennon will offer the defence that his words were not meant literally, but colloquially and will get away with a wee warning to be a bit more careful next time.

For that's the way things appear to be done in the cosy relationship which many see as existing between Stuart Regan and Celtic chief executive and Hampden board member, Peter Lawwell's SFA and Celtic.
