    Not strictly true. The white spaces reflect a bright light, the black bars a not so bright light. The scanner picks up both lights and converts them into binary digits which are interpreted in a variety of ways.

    Was curious about this so googled it. Apparently this was very much the case for a long time (and it's still used in some fragrances) it's not really used in food anymore because it is too expensive and they use other stuff nowadays.

    Still listed as safe for food though and could be hidden under "natural flavours" on an ingredient list.

    Beaver bum extract has been around since at least the Roman times.
