Many supporters will attribute their initial memories of supporting Southampton FC to certain tunes they heard on the PA systems of the two grounds [don't you dare tell me you're old enough to comment on three] they first heard the pre-match stuff. My early Dell memories are filled with Tamla Motown and good British Pop Music which I loved, so I've been trawling through some of that stuff recently. This is absolutely typical of the stuff that came over the speakers pre-match. I can't hear it these days without it evoking memories of those early Division One heroes. These tracks are mere examples:

    What's your earliest era..?

Chris Nichols and Ian Branfoot eras with the marching bands. Think they should bring them back!

I think the DJ at my time liked the Four Tops because he played everything they released. Another example of what pervaded my early memories. Mind you anything Smokey Robinson got played a lot:

Ride a White Swan by T Rex was played over the tannoy for my first match. Every time I hear it I am there back on the terracing in the east stand right in the middle of a load of very loud Arsenal fans.

This used to get played an awful lot: Edison Lighthouse - Love Grows:

Note Peter Marinello, an early post George Best look-a-like hero.

Think yourselves lucky, I remember before the tannoy music the sight of the Albion Band trying to march around the Dell and play instruments at the same time.
    Christ they were awful.

I remember the Albion Band. They were JCLs or part of the pre-match stuff. Apart from the few, does anyone remember the constant pop tunes that were played over the tannoys..? To me they became something that were part of icy cold feet, reading the programme, and part of the pre-match atmosphere.

Edit: Tbh, I'm a bit disappointed that Godder's first Dell music memories weren't of **Del Shannon or Bill Haley, or the ilk..!

    **Isn't that an appropriate name..?

Not entirely sure you'll get any tannoy memories at SMS ... you need to be able to hear it first.

Early ninetines after sky got involved it was always "One Vision" by Queen that the players would run out to. Don't know if that was a Dell thing, or a nationwide thing. Anyway, excellent song.

I played rather than watched football into my late thirties and only moved to Southampton from the Thames Valley for work in 1971. It was my younger sister's husband who persuaded me to go to Saints home match against Arsenal in 1971 otherwise I may never have become a fan.

Has SMS got a tannoy/PA system?
Where I stand/sit in the Northam/Kingsland corner I can hear little or nothing coming out of "Amstrad" type system

JCL - Just got it. Blooming acronyms. The very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov has been posting on one of those women's message boards and she left it open on the screen. When I read what she had written she had referred to me as DH. I am trying to fathom out whether this means dear husband or dear heart. I can't ask her otherwise she'll accuse me of reading her postings.
