Our youngsters are heading off this week to participate in the Dallas Cup. Originally founded in 1980 by the Texas Longhorns Soccer Club, the tournament always takes place between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Now a recognised international event, it is invitation only, at the U19 level.

This year the Fulham team head up the opening game of the tournament, taking on Coritiba FC of Brazil (the current ‘champions)’ this Sunday 24th March at the Cotton Bowl.

The other teams taking part are:

Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany)
LA Galaxy (USA)
Fluminense FC (Brazil)
Tigres (Mexico)
Club America (Mexico)
and
Manchester United

Since it’s an U19 tournament the Fulham squad will be interesting and was presumably one of the reasons for postponing yesterday’s U21 game against Sunderland.

The U19 squad travelled out to the USA two days ago and before they left the Club spoke with Emerson "Mighty Mouse" Hyndman whose hails from the host town of Dallas. His Grandfather is the current coach of Dallas FC

His response to one question confirms how prestigious this Cup competition is and the respect our youngsters should get for being invited:

You’ll be part of the Under-19 squad that take part in the 2012/13 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup which kicks off on Sunday. You must be excited about returning to your home city?

Of course, it’s one of the best tournaments in youth football, with teams from all over the world taking part. I played in it when I was younger with my team in Dallas, and always enjoyed being involved. The likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have all entered over the years, as have Real Madrid, AC Milan, Paris St Germain and Ajax. You also get a lot of Brazilian, Argentine and Mexican teams too. So many top players featured when they were young, like Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, David Beckham, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney. I remember watching the older boys in the elite groups when I was young and thinking how good the players were and that one day I’d love to be part of that – now I have that chance. The competition is fierce, but hopefully we can show what we’re capable of.

Hopefully this is the first of a series of articles from the Club during the tournament (we are unlikely to get much in the national press - oh, but then again ManU are also involved)

The Fulham squad is -

1. Max Oberschmidt, 2. Josh Passley, 3. Sean Kavanagh, 4. Stephen Arthurworrey, 5. Jack Grimmer, 6. Ronny Minkwitz, 7. Ryan Williams, 8. Lasse Vigen Christensen, 9. Cauley Woodrow, 10. Muamer Tankovic, 11. Charles Banya, 12. Marek Rodak, 14. George Williams, 15. Emerson Hyndman, 16. Solomon Sambou, 17. Dino Islamovic, 18. Daniel O’Reilly, 19. Jordan Evans, 20. Cameron Burgess, 21. Noe Baba, 22. Lyle Della Verde.

Team is: Marek Rodak, Josh Passley, Stephen Arthurworrey, Jack Grimmer, Ronny Minkwitz, Ryan Williams, Charles Banya, Solomon Sambou, Tom Richards, Muamer Tankovic, Cauley Woodrow

2-0 Jordan Evans with a stunning finish with his first touch after replacing Williams in the 71st minute.

Fulham are bossing this game and playing all the football. That goal was well deserved.

3-0 Tankovic in the 75th minute with an equally stunning finish, whilst falling backwards.

EDIT: Followed by two great saves from Rodek to keep that clean sheet.

Final score: Fulham 3 Coritiba 1

Tankovic and Woodrow were very good today, deserved their goals. Minkwitz looked good in the middle and our wide players gave us good outlets running at their full backs. Hyndman was impressive off the bench.

I was impressed with everyone today, a very professional performance. We played good football, kept the ball on the floor and just passed our way around the Brazilians. Didn't really get a chance to see how good our defenders were, but our attacking players looked incisive and creative today. We did tire in the final 10 minutes, which made the substitution of our goalkeeper around the 80th minute pretty questionable, but looked great until then.

Today's game kicks off at 5pm our time - against LA Galaxy who beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1.

Hopefully I will be back in time for that game.

I have to say I enjoyed watching our lads play a lot more than I thought I would. I really hope the club comes up with a way to show streams of them playing (or more complete highlights) once they get back; just seems to make a ton of sense. If I watched these lads for a few months, before seeing players like the Tank step up to the first team... well, I think I'd feel a deeper bond with my club that would likely be reflected in more ticket sales.

Just a thought!

As you'll have seen, the Board is 'rolled back' to 25th March. So just to confirm, after last night's magnificent 5-0 win over Eintracht we are in the semi-final. We play the Brazilian club Fluminense tomorrow, kick off 10pm our time.

Here is a link to the schedule of results to date and the semi-final details. As you'll also see the mighty ManU didn't make it! Their group winners, the Japanese team, seem the biggest threat.

Big game for Steve Wigley and the youngsters tonight.

It will be a tough game. Fluminense play typical Brazilian football but with that 5-0 trouncing of Eintracht our lads must be high on confidence. The kick-off time has changed - it's now 19.30 their time; 12.30 our time. Ughh!!

Fluminense were typical south american style in their first game - niggling fouls, dramatic falls, etc - they do hold possession pretty well and some good attacking play. Aalborg held them in their second, playing a "north european" game - strength and energy.

I think fitness/tiredness will be important for us and them. All in all, we should win.
