RT can do a number of things:

If you follow someone famous but other don't, by retweeting it, your friends can see the message too - its just a quicker way of repeating it to your mates.

A lot people ask for RT from famous lads in the same way you'd ask for an autograph - just a recognition of your interaction with them I guess...

Aye, about right...Its a really useful feature when you follow people like UtdforNewcastle 'cause they'll retweet loads of messages involving newcastle...Means you get a condensed newsfeed and don't have to follow 40 odd different people to get info if that makes sense!
