Based on the names submitted by the eight teams, the initial 710 players registered for the men's auction next week has been cut to 243. Not all 243 players will ultimately go under the hammer, but those who have been cut definitely won't.

The top 5 domestic players, based on the preferences of the eight teams, are Vince, Cox, Root, Bairstow and Rashid, whilst the top 5 overseas players are Narine, Markram, Rauf, Miller and Mitchell. They will be the first ones to be auction off.

They will be followed by five batters (Allen, QDK, Rickelton, Seifert, Crawley), five all-rounders (Curran, Khan, Willey, Azmatullah, Atkinson), five spinners (Hosein, Tariq, Ghazanfar, Hossain, Chohan), and five fast bowlers (Afridi, Baker, Mahmood, Tongue, Luke Wood). That's 30 players, so there should be a further 20 players in round one of the auction because but my understanding is that it will ultimately contain 50 players in total.

We've got our no.5 and no.6 batting sorted, so there should be no need to target Miller or Mitchell. Hopefully that gives us a better chance of getting Narine or Markram (both would be nice - but it won't happen), alongside Vince presumably.
Surely there will be more than 50 players? Each side only has 4 players signed so far and if each team builds a squad of 16 players, that's 96 players that need to be signed. Even accounting for wildcard selections, 50 isn't enough. 50 players would mean each side would sign an average of 6 players in the auction.

On the one hand, a lack of top class spinners could mean that Narine fetches a very price. But on the other hand, a number of sides don't need him.

MSG are sorted with Dawson and Noor. Spirit are probably sorted with Zampa and support from Livingstone. MIL do traditionally like three spinners, but with Khan and Jacks already secured they are unlikely to go big for a third spinner. Cardiff isn't generally great for spinners due to the short straight boundaries, so Fire might look elsewhere (and they already have Rachin). Sunrisers will presumably target trying to get Rashid back. Rockets have Santner, so would they really go big on Narine?

50 players is only round one. There are three rounds.

After round one, there will be a break for each side to submit names (from the 243 list) who they would like to see in round two. It can include any of the initial 50 who might not have been auctioned-off in round one.

There will then be a break after round two, with a similar process of submitting names for round three. But the difference this time is that if you nominate a player for round three, then you must bid on them (subject to having the budget). In round two, you could nominate a player but then ultimately decide against bidding for them.

Ah that makes more sense.

The other 20 names for round one are five more batters (Smeed, TKC, Clarke, Abell, Du Plooy), five more all-rounders (Coles, Gregory, Lawrence, Ayub, Dwarshuis), five more spinners (Sowter, Crane, Hartley, Maharaj, Abrar), and five more fast bowlers (Boult, Payne, Jordan, Potts, Stone).

That means the likes of Henry, Rutherford, COverton, Hasaranga, Mills, Howell, Malan, Ngidi, Billings - and many, many others - will have to wait until rounds two or three, subject to being nominated.

In terms of Hampshire players, in addition to Vince and Baker being named in the initial 50, Wood, Turner, Albert, Currie, Fuller, Jack and Mayes all made the 243 cut.

Not Weatherley or Wheal. Which is good news for our 50 over campaign (although in theory they could yet get into the 100 as wildcards or injury replacements).

Would be surprised if Jack or Mayes got selected, even Fuller.

Sounds like Neser has been pulled out of his deal with us. Which means we'd have lost our second overseas player shortly before the season starts for the second season running. Feels like the universe is punishing us for letting Abbas go.

I wonder who this season's Brett Hampton will be?

Oh well, he was only here for the start of the season anyway.

My four (or five) opener choices for next week's auction are all in this match. And it's Finn who is stealing the show.

But 169 is no score to chase at all.

So Seales for Neser it is then. Decent replacement with the ball but puts even more pressure on the top 7 to deliver given that he has a first class batting average of below 10!

Perhaps something like:

Middleton
Orr
Gubbins
Lehmann
Albert
Dawson
Brown (capt) (wk)
Fuller
Abbott
Baker or Turner
Seales

Happy with that replacement. Seales is an excellent bowler at County level. Not as good at batting as Neser but I was more concerned about the bowling side anyway. And it's not another Hampton!

Prest > Albert for me.
