Smart move. The 2nd test is a day-nighter where the ball will swing massively. Therefore keeping Jimmy fresh for that test is the right move.
I read that he had a calf injury, that had reacted badly after bowling a few overs (7) in the nets.
Also said that he suffered a calf injury in the first Ashes test in 2019, after bowling 4 overs, that stopped him from taking part in the rest of the series, so probably a wise precaution.
Looking at the 12 man squad, I'm guessing 10 of them are pencilled in and it's between Leach and Woakes for the final spot. They might leave it until the very last minute to decide whether an out-and-out spinner is warranted.
I can't see Broad being left out (not without Jimmy in the attack). Wood's pace makes him a must. And I'm expecting to Robinson to join them both.

Got an awful feeling that after an hour of cricket i won't be quite so keen to stay up late and watch it.
Hope they prove me wrong but having been over in Oz in 2013 i worry this might be a similar outcome!

If the pitch was deemed helpful to the bowlers, and conditions were conducive to swing, why did we choose to bat first?
This was the pitch report from Ian Healy, prior to the toss.
“It’s green … I think this might be a bowl first (pitch). It goes against a lot in our cricket mythology. It’s been overcast, heavy rain last week, there was a big storm again on Saturday night.” Healy said.
“If you get knocked over on day one, it’s still difficult to bat (on) day two, because it quickens up and hardens up, Just don’t be disastrous in the first innings.” he added.
