Isn't it the 4th or 5th? No shame in pushing Essex so close. They respected the potency of the Somerset attack in diging out a draw on what was a very dead wicket. Next time this kind of tournament is played, play it at the Oval. Who wants to see bowling attacks worn down on a placid track that Lords seems to offer up? No wonder Middlesex play such dull cricket on wickets like that.

That aside, I hope Leicester City have put a smile on everyone's faces today. It makes the 5-2 drubbing from Spurs seem not quite so bad!!

Second in 2001, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. And yes, it would have been good to see the pitch prepared for a result, rather than actually get better as the days passed.

I this year has been exceptional, but it is insulting to 4 day cricket to have 4 matches scheduled in September each year. And at this time of year, the light is poor, pitches unpredictable. Absolutely ludicrous!! Having said that, I hope room is found for the Bob Willis Trophy, and space could be found as a second four day tournament, if the county championship format was reformed, and T20 was shifted to the end of the season.

You've completely contradicted yourself. T20 will be played in the summer because it draws the biggest crowds and therefore is the biggest money earner. Then you've got The Hundred. BW Trophy was a one time thing. Players are hardly going to turn down playing in the Hundred for a pointless 4 day competition (which it will be for the return of the CC).

Just a bit of advice Tom. If you disagree with someone that is fine, but you need to choose your words a bit more carefully, otherwise you might make yourself unpopular. For example, You could have said, "Having read your remarks, I think you may have contradicted yourself, and I disagree. For example .." That way you are being a bit more polite."
 
My understanding is now that Pope has a central contract, we'll have to choose between him and Archer as our designated England player for the 100.

In a straight comparison, I'd suggest there's no decision - it's Jofra every time. However, I don't think it has yet been confirmed which England fixtures will clash with the 100. That's important because if it's mainly white ball fixtures, then Pope's availability would be much greater than Jofra's. (Whereas with test matches, there's unlikely to be any difference in their availability.)
 
This is a great fightback by Leics. They were nowhere after 10 overs of this game.
 
What an end! A mis-field on the last ball ties the game and knocks Leicester out. Klein will not sleep tonight.
 
Who succeeded Mike Atherton as captain of England? I admit to not knowing until I read his autobiography, "Playing with Fire." The player in question comes across as a very intense character, as he always felt pressure to.perform. He comes across as someone who would never do anything underhand to gain an advantage or demean team mate or opponent.

The writing is a bit laboured and lacks the crispness of a journalist's writing, say Christopher Martin-Jenkins, but it was his first, so I won't be too harsh.

Nassar Hussain came after Atherton if memory serves.

I can't stand Nassar when he commentate. It's almost as if he always wants an English batsman to get out.
 
I have never heard him commentate as I don't have SKY, nor will I ever. Your view about him does surprise me, though, as he comes across in his book as a very passionate person, who was proud to play for England.
 
Interesting to see who he disliked! Mike Gatting, for starters. He has contempt for Botham as a pundit, Agnew as well, and Bob Willis who were less than complimentary about his one-day game.

This is why cricketing autobiographies can be so good in what they reveal, but then it is important to read between the lines and the context in which it took place.
 
Anyone see Flintoff on bulimia on BBC? Watched it last night. I had no idea he had this and found the programme excellent viewing. It underlined the issues out there around mental health and how difficult it can be for some people to talk about the or seek help.
 
Surrey have somewhat struck lucky in that conditions appear to be very similar to how they've been winning on the Oval. Big boundaries + a slow wicket = success for their three man spin attack.
 
And Gloucs are duly doing exactly what we did in the rain reduced game vs Surrey. Scared themselves into thinking that a shortened game means that everything has to go - but getting caught out doing so, with no pace on the ball and big boundaries.
 
Livingstone's final over was massively taken down (by Essex) to knock them out in the QFs last season, and it's a repeat scenario in the SF this year.
