As soon as we lost a first innings lead this was always going to happen - barring anything miraculous.

Good test match and with Archers pace and Stokes, Bairstow and Burns starting to look like getting runs things are looking up for the series. Buttler looked a little better too

I THINK it will be a draw , but the uplift in the team they take from this will be massive .

I agree 100% the loss of smith from this innings and possibly the next match will be a factor , But Jofra ! WOW !

Having said that . I have thought that the Aussies would be favourites over the series and I still think that .

When you consider how much time was lost in this match, for England to engineer even a sniff of a chance of winning is a fantastic effort. We’ve seen the dawn of a new era of England fast bowling, that’s for sure.

All we need now is an opening pair of batsmen...

Burns is definitely going to be opening for a while. He's shown he has the technique and patience to be an opener.

Oh I agree. It was interesting listening to Michael Vaughan regarding Jason Roy on the TMS Podcast last night though. He reckons that Roy should be given license to play like he does in white-ball cricket, so that even if it doesn’t come off very often, the times that it does would set up the innings beautifully. He might as well, as there isn’t anyone else around to partner Burns.

I know he got a duck today, but picking the highest scoring opener in county cricket this season - and second highest scorer full stop - might not be a bad idea.

The only guy who has outscored him made 50 for Australia today...

Didn’t you say the other day that Sibley isn’t ready yet?

Not me.

I said that I wouldn't bat Sibley at 4. Because after just one test (well, two if you include Ireland), they were never going to move Roy. Nor drop Root back to 4. So the highest slot realistically available for this test was 4. Which wouldn't suit Sibley.

I think Roy will get at least one more chance, but Sibley seems to be the obvious replacement.
